Chapter 12: Training
Wang Li left Mu Yuechan's courtyard with a heavy sigh, his breath visible in the frigid air. The decision had been made—he was going to participate in the Winter Moon Tournament. It wasn't that he particularly wanted to, but there had been no real way out. Mu Yuechan had trapped him with her words, and now he was stuck in a fight he wasn't prepared for.
The worst part? He could feel the presence of several figures hiding nearby.
He turned a corner, and as expected, three very familiar faces stepped out from the shadows—Mu Qingling, Lin Ruoyan, and Feng Yuling.
"Well, well," Feng Yuling purred, folding her arms across her ample chest. "Look at you, already making promises to our dear Ice Demoness. You sure work fast, Wang Li."
Lin Ruoyan scoffed, flipping her crimson hair over her shoulder. "More like digging his own grave." She eyed him with a mix of annoyance and curiosity. "You? In the Winter Moon Tournament? Do you even know the kind of monsters that compete in that thing?"
Mu Qingling grinned and nudged him in the ribs. "Hehehe, I think it's romantic~ Big Sister Mu gave you a chance to prove yourself! It's like a love trial!"
Wang Li pinched the bridge of his nose. "Romantic? Qingling, this isn't some poetic reunion—it's a death sentence."
"Then why'd you agree?" Feng Yuling asked, tilting her head. Her fox ears twitched slightly, her golden eyes gleaming with amusement. "If you were truly scared, you could have refused. Or do you still have feelings for Mu Yuechan?"
Wang Li's stomach twisted.
Did he?
He had spent years trying to convince himself that what they had was long over.
And yet…
The way she had looked at him tonight, the unspoken emotion hidden beneath that icy mask—it was messing with his head.
But he wasn't about to admit that in front of these three.
"I agreed because I don't want to be her enemy," he said simply. "And because I have no intention of being weak in this world."
Lin Ruoyan narrowed her eyes. "Hah. Bold words. But do you even have a plan?"
Wang Li sighed. "Not really. I was hoping you three would be kind enough to train me."
Silence.
The three women stared at him.
Then—
"Hahaha!" Feng Yuling burst out laughing. "Oh, I love this. You think we'll just help you because you asked nicely?"
Lin Ruoyan smirked. "You must really be desperate."
Mu Qingling, however, clapped her hands excitedly. "Ooooh, I like this idea! Training Wang Li sounds fun!"
Wang Li turned to her, hopeful. "See? Qingling is reasonable!"
Feng Yuling shook her head, her tails swaying lazily behind her. "No, no, no. If we're going to train you, it has to be fun for us too."
Lin Ruoyan grinned. "Oh, I have plenty of fun ideas."
Wang Li's instincts screamed that he was about to regret this.
—
The next morning, Wang Li found himself standing in the Frozen Lotus Sect's training grounds, shivering not just from the cold, but from the sheer amount of killing intent directed at him.
Across from him stood Lin Ruoyan, cracking her knuckles with an eager grin. "Alright, let's see what you've got."
Mu Qingling, sitting on a nearby rock, cheered. "Go, Wang Li! You can do it!"
Feng Yuling, lounging with a cup of tea, smirked. "Try not to die too quickly, dear."
Wang Li gulped.
Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all.
And then Lin Ruoyan attacked.
Wang Li barely had time to blink before Lin Ruoyan vanished.
In an instant, a blazing fist was already inches from his face. His instincts screamed at him, and he threw himself backward just in time. The impact of her strike cracked the frozen ground where he had stood, sending shards of ice flying in all directions.
"You're too slow," Lin Ruoyan said, already dashing toward him again.
Wang Li cursed and rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding another fiery strike. The air around her shimmered with heat, turning the frost-covered training grounds into a battlefield of fire and ice.
Mu Qingling cheered from the sidelines. "Go, Big Sis Ruoyan! Make him work for it!"
Feng Yuling took a sip of her tea, her golden fox eyes gleaming with amusement. "I'd give him… oh, five more minutes before he collapses."
Wang Li wasn't about to let that happen.
He gritted his teeth, forcing his body to move faster. Lin Ruoyan was fast, but he had experience dodging ex-girlfriend-induced attacks. If he could just get used to her rhythm—
BOOM!
Her next strike exploded like a firecracker, and the shockwave sent Wang Li skidding across the ice. He barely managed to steady himself before she came at him again.
"You're just dodging," she taunted. "What's wrong? Scared to hit me?"
"I'd rather not be burned alive!" Wang Li shot back.
Lin Ruoyan smirked. "Then fight back already."
Wang Li cursed internally. He had no choice. If he didn't start attacking, she was going to break every bone in his body.
Fine.
If she wanted him to fight back, then he'd give her exactly what she asked for.
He exhaled, then channeled his qi. A faint golden glow surged around him as he activated the only martial art technique he had practiced since arriving in this world—
Dragon Step!
His body blurred, and in a flash, he appeared behind Lin Ruoyan, aiming a palm strike at her back.
She spun around at the last second, blocking it with her forearm. But the force of the attack sent her sliding backward.
"Oh?" Feng Yuling raised an eyebrow. "That was unexpected."
Mu Qingling clapped excitedly. "Wang Li actually pushed her back! That's progress!"
Lin Ruoyan, however, wasn't impressed. "Hah! Not bad, but—"
Her fist ignited. The flames wrapped around her arm like a coiled dragon, the sheer heat melting the ice beneath her.
"—you're still not fast enough."
Before Wang Li could react, she exploded forward, a flaming comet of destruction heading straight for him.
He had just enough time to mutter, "Oh, come on."
Then the world erupted into fire.
---
Three Hours Later
Wang Li lay on his back, gasping for breath, his body sore from head to toe. The ice beneath him was half-melted, a testament to Lin Ruoyan's overwhelming power. His clothes were singed, his limbs ached, and he was pretty sure he had a minor concussion.
Feng Yuling leaned over him, looking amused. "You're still alive. I suppose that's impressive."
Mu Qingling crouched beside him, poking his cheek. "Hey, hey, are you dead?"
Wang Li groaned. "Not yet. But give me five minutes, and maybe I will be."
Lin Ruoyan cracked her knuckles. "Tch. That was pathetic. You barely lasted."
Wang Li glared at her. "I lasted three hours!"
"You mostly spent it dodging."
"Because you were trying to kill me!"
She smirked. "And yet, you're still here. Maybe you're tougher than I thought."
Feng Yuling chuckled. "Shall we move on to the next part of training?"
Wang Li froze.
"Wait. You mean—"
Lin Ruoyan grinned. "That was just the warm-up."
