Chapter 3: Chapter: 3
The end of middle school brought a mixture of relief and uncertainty for Renji. He had spent years preparing himself for this moment, building his strength, refining his skills, and silently nurturing his ambition to go pro. Now, it was time to decide which high school would shape the next chapter of his journey.
For weeks, Renji poured over brochures, online reviews, and even watched recordings of high school baseball tournaments. The list of potential schools eventually narrowed to four:
* Teito High School
* Ichidai Sankou High School
* Inashiro Industrial High School
* Seidou High School.
Each had an impressive baseball program, but Renji needed more than prestige—he needed the perfect fit.
Teito High School was a powerhouse, famous for its rigorous baseball training regimen. Their players were physically imposing, their games intense. But as Renji read further, he discovered that Teito focused heavily on raw power and strength, with little emphasis on technical finesse or strategic play. Given his lean build and preference for precision over brute force, Renji decided against it.
Ichidai Sankou High School boasted a balanced team with a solid track record. Their program was comprehensive, blending strength training with technical improvement. However, Renji noted that their coaching style didn't align with his needs. Their system emphasized teamwork to the point of minimizing individual growth—a valuable philosophy, but Renji needed a place where he could shine while contributing to a team effort.
Inashiro Industrial High School, home to the legendary Narumiya Mei, was another top contender. Their program was undeniably elite, but their focus on star players like Narumiya made Renji hesitant. He wanted to prove himself, not live in someone else's shadow. Besides, their proximity to his home would make it difficult to experience the independence he sought.
Finally, there was Seidou High School. Renji's heart stirred as he learned more about it. Known for its competitive spirit, rigorous training, and emphasis on teamwork and individual growth, Seidou seemed to check all the boxes. Their balance of offense and defense, combined with their ability to nurture both seasoned and rising talent, impressed him. However, what truly caught Renji's attention was the absence of a dominant ace pitcher in the current lineup. He saw an opportunity not just to join the team but to fill that critical role. With his precision, control, and raw power, Renji believed he had the potential to become Seidou's ace even as a first-year.
"Seidou it is," Renji decided one evening, closing the browser on his laptop.
Renji applied through the general academic entry requirements, ensuring his grades met the standard. His parents were both surprised and relieved by his decision. They had worried he would prioritize baseball over his studies, but his balanced approach reassured them.
"So, you've decided?" his father, Hiroshi, asked over dinner one night.
Renji nodded. "Seidou has the best program for me. I'll join their baseball team and aim for the top."
His mother, Mayumi, smiled warmly. "We're proud of you, Renji. Just promise us one thing: don't overwork yourself."
"I promise," Renji replied, his resolve shining in his eyes.
The day Renji received his acceptance letter was a joyous one. The envelope felt heavier than it was, laden with the weight of his dreams and aspirations. Inside was a note welcoming him to Seidou High School and detailing the requirements for the baseball team—including mandatory residence in the Seidou Spirit Dormitory.
Living away from home was both exciting and daunting. Renji spent the following weeks preparing, packing his belongings, and cherishing every moment with his family. On his last night at home, his parents threw a small farewell dinner.
As they sat around the table, Hiroshi handed Renji a small gift. Inside was a brand-new baseball glove, its leather soft and ready for use.
"You'll need this," his father said, his voice filled with pride. "Show them what you're made of."
Mayumi leaned forward with her own gift: a cap embroidered with Renji's name. "This is so you never forget where you come from," she said, tears glistening in her eyes.
Renji was deeply touched. "Thank you," he said, clutching the gifts. "I won't let you down."
That evening, they played catch in the backyard one last time. The familiar thud of the ball in his glove, the sound of laughter, and the warmth of his parents' presence filled the air. For Renji, it was a perfect send-off—a reminder of where he came from and the love that would always support him as he pursued his dreams.

Renji stepped onto the sprawling campus of Seidou High School, a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation swirling within him. After completing his formalities at the administration office, he was directed to meet Rei Takashima, the scout and assistant director of the baseball team. Renji had heard of her sharp eye for talent and dedication to the team, and now, he was about to meet her in person.
"Renji Arata?" a voice called out. Turning, Renji saw a young woman with a composed demeanor and piercing yet kind eyes. Rei Takashima extended her hand. "Welcome to Seidou. I'll show you to the dormitory."
Renji shook her hand, a sense of reassurance washing over him. "Thank you, Takashima-san."
Rei led him across the campus, pointing out key facilities along the way—the baseball field, gymnasium, and indoor batting cage. "You'll be spending a lot of time here," she said, gesturing toward the practice areas. "Seidou's training is rigorous, but it's what shapes champions. I'm sure you'll fit right in."
Finally, they arrived at the dormitory. Rei stopped at the entrance, handing him a small map and key. "This is your room assignment. Settle in, and I'll see you at the field tomorrow."
Renji bowed respectfully. "Thank you, Takashima-san."
Renji's room was on the second floor, labeled Room 12. As he pushed open the door, he was greeted by two older students who were already inside.
"Ah, you must be the first-year," said a tall, broad-shouldered boy with an easy grin. "I'm Ichiro Sakai, third year. And this," he gestured to a shorter boy with sharp eyes and a clean-shaven head, "is Shoji Higasa, second year," he said.
Renji introduced himself, bowing politely. "I'm Renji Arata. It's nice to meet you, senpai."
"No need to be so formal," Sakai said with a chuckle. "We're roommates now, so just relax."
Renji smiled and set about unpacking his luggage. As he worked, the three of them fell into easy conversation, the topic inevitably turning to baseball.
"The training here is no joke," Ichiro warned, leaning against his bunk. "Coach Kataoka runs a tight ship, and the seniors push hard during practice. But if you're serious about becoming the starting player, you'll need to show results."
"I've been preparing for this," Renji replied, his voice steady with determination. "I'm ready to give it my all."
Shoji nodded approvingly. "Hiya~"
As they chatted, a sudden, piercing scream echoed from the floor below. Renji froze, his eyes darting to the door.
"What was that?" he asked, alarmed.
Ichiro and Shoji exchanged knowing grins. "Ah, that's Room 05," Ichiro explained. "It's an old tradition. The seniors there always find creative ways to welcome first-years."
Ichiro laughed. "Don't worry, it's harmless. Just their way of keeping things lively around here."
Renji relaxed slightly but couldn't help feeling a twinge of curiosity. Despite the odd interruption, the three of them continued talking until exhaustion set in. One by one, they fell asleep, the sounds of the bustling dormitory fading into the night.
Renji lay awake for a while, staring at the ceiling. His new journey at Seidou had begun, and while the path ahead was uncertain, he felt a growing sense of belonging. Surrounded by teammates, challenges, and opportunities, he knew this was where he was meant to be.
