Reincarnated as a Doomed Extra

Chapter 11: Change[2]

Evil entity

I felt like this term had been haunting me since I came here, not to mention that one was probably inhabiting my body. However, unfortunately, what Jared said was true.

There were many people who misunderstood the darkness element as a corrupt and evil element.

Take the Church of Light for example; if they heard about my possession of the darkness element, they might put Solon, their supposed saint, aside and hunt me down with the goal of purifying me instead of flattering Solon, who they see as the savior.

This was very realistic, even if it seemed exaggerated. In fact, even in the game, there were those who suffered from this indirectly.

First, you have to know that Solon wasn't the only protagonist of the game.

Yes, there was another one. A girl even.

In the game's interface, it seems as if there were two paths to play, choosing one of them, and although I didn't care to play her side of the story and see her full impact on it, the two paths had crossed before because they would enter the same academy.

Valheim Magic Academy.

It's the same place that Solon will go to after he is caught by the Holy Knights of the Church of Light. They wanted their saint to get the best degree of education after all.

"Why didn't you tell me about your affinities before?" Solon said with a pout as he came and sat beside me.

"It's not like I wanted to hide it… especially you, Solon. You know I wouldn't do something like that." I stretched out on the ground and my long hair spread everywhere.

'Should I cut it?'

"Still, you could have at least told me…" Solon whispered to himself.

I shrugged and let out a tired sigh upon hearing Solon's pouting whisper. He was really starting to act like a younger brother now…

Should I tell him to go put on his shoes when I go out?

Silence filled the place, but it wasn't awkward, rather comfortable. The nearby trees swayed and their leaves danced quietly as the air collided with them.

The glow of the sun in the sky cast its warm shadows on us.

Ryan, one of the awakened in the village, had called Jared a little while ago, so Solon and I were left alone to enjoy the surrounding calm.

I felt like I could leave behind the worry of the demon's appearance and stretch out forever.

However, I knew that was a far-fetched dream.

I had a lot on my hands to work on.

There was also a theory I wanted to test…

If it succeeded, let's just say it would be revolutionary for the inhabitants of this world if I decided to show it to them.

After moments of peaceful silence, Solon broke the silence.

"Hey, Selas."

"What?" I replied lazily.

He asked me while looking at the sky with a dreamy expression on his face, "What will you do now that you've Awakened?"

What will I do now?

I was asking myself the same thing.

If we leave aside the fact that my little brother will be dragged into the chaos of this world, I didn't have anything to do for myself to be honest…

'I… what did I wish for previously…?' I asked myself as if it could answer me. However, no matter how deep I went into the question, I couldn't get an answer.

After moments of contemplation, I turned my head and looked at Solon sitting next to me. The falling sunlight made his skin glow, making him look like a pure angel enveloped in light.

I finally replied, "I… don't know… What about you?"

Solon ignored my question and frowned because of my answer. "How do you not know? Isn't an Awakened supposed to be a shield for the vulnerable and a symbol of justice?"

Default protagonist dialogue: Activated

"That's what I wished for and what I'll be. Besides, if we enroll in the Adventurer's Guild and get a good income, we can help the village significantly to repay their kindness." He finished with a bright smile.

'Adventurer's Guild?' I looked at Solon with an amused smile.

Ah, sorry brother, but I'll hold your hand when I tell you this…

"Heh, maybe I'll just find a powerful and famous lady who will appreciate my body…" I thought.

Heavy silence suddenly fell.

"…"

Hmm? What?

What's with that look?

For some reason, Solon's face became paler than mine. His lips parted in a perfect O shape as he pointed his trembling finger at me.

The expression of betrayal was drawn all over his face.

I felt like he was accusing me of committing a terrible crime with his strange reaction.

No, wait a minute…

Don't tell me…

"…"

"Wait, Solon. You misunderstood that!"

My face flushed slightly with embarrassment as I tried to remedy the situation.

The last thing I wanted was to tarnish my perfect image in front of my little brother!

"…"

Solon didn't look convinced and was still giving me the same harsh reaction.

"What did I misunderstand?" He shook his head. "No, forget about that. Why did she have to be a 'powerful' and 'famous' lady…?"

'Even I wanted an answer to that question!' I screamed internally.

To control the situation with the least amount of suspicion, I used my rigid facial expressions to give an indifferent response.

"It was all a slip of the tongue. You don't think I'm interested in that kind of thing, do you?"

Solon was confused by the clash of two different behaviors in me and hesitated as if he doubted what he heard.

'Heh, easy…' I thought with relief as I put my head back on the ground.

"Solon! Uncle Jared is calling you at the village gate!"

We heard a young woman's shout from the other side of the farm, which removed the prevailing tension between us and relieved me of Solon's suspicious gaze.

Holy fuck, that was close…

Solon and I stood up and headed towards the village gate after we passed by the house and put on our usual clothes.

As we passed through the roads, I noticed that there were many people looking towards the gate. When I followed their line of sight, I understood why they were doing so.

At the humble wooden gate, two carriages stood, screaming of wealth and glory. They were the kind of advanced carriages that didn't need horses or a magical beast to pull them, but blood could be seen on some of their wheels and their strong wood. These two carriages had definitely seen better days.

After scrutinizing the appearance of the carriage as we approached it, I panicked at the emblem hanging on its front.

'What are they doing here…?'

I felt light drops of sweat slide down my back.

The shiny silver emblem depicted a woman wearing a simple white robe with angel wings folded forward in a protective embrace as she clasped her hands in a compassionate prayer.

This was undoubtedly the symbol of the Church of Light. The church with the most widespread and revered religion.

'What the hell is going on?!'

'Why is there no demon and why are they here in the village?!'

I could only suppress my questions and thank my face for its rigidity when I noticed a man with blond hair and blue eyes standing next to the two carriages with Jared, talking about something.

He was wearing a sleek and shiny silver armor with a long white cloak, making him look like your perfect knight. And he really was.

Julius Bright.

One of the ten Holy Knights of the Church of Light and the most pious of them.

I felt like I wanted to shrink and disappear when he stared in our direction with great intensity. The weight of his gaze alone made me feel like an ant in front of a giant elephant. Although I knew the reason for the intensity of his gaze, I couldn't help but feel like he was accusing me of awakening the darkness element.

For your information, no one could determine another's element just by looking or even feeling the person.

It was an unjustified fear.

'Fast!'

I thought, looking in amazement at Julius, who was next to the carriage a moment ago, kneeling before us. Well, before Solon.

His action caused confusion and curiosity to spread among those around, and Jared frowned, although I doubt Julius had told him anything yet.

Ignoring the chaos he caused around him, Julius spoke in a low voice that only we could hear, "I greet the holy child of light."

"Wh-what? Child?"

Solon was caught off guard, making him very confused.

Julius placed his hand on his chest, still bowing to Solon with respect, "Based on the orders of the Church and the revelation of our Goddess, I, the Holy Knight Julius, have come to secure you, sir. Would you please come with me to the main church in the capital?"

Solon looked at me in confusion, backing away and urging me to do something with his pitiful look.

To think he can't even handle the presence Julius is releasing…

I let out an internal sigh when I noticed the tense atmosphere. I couldn't determine whether Julius was doing it on purpose or if he was just stupid.

"Um, sir. How about going somewhere else to complete this discussion?" I spoke with a smile and as politely as possible.

Julius raised his head so that his green eyes met mine, hidden behind my hair. After two moments of probably connecting things in his head, his gaze intensified and changed. It became more frightening in another way. He looked as if he was worshiping me too, which made my skin crawl.

'What now?! Wait, he's not gay, is he…?' I thought anxiously, and my body shivered, ready to run away.

"Then please follow me to the carriage."

Fortunately, my suspicions dissipated when Julius stood up and smoothly led us to one of the luxurious and blood-stained carriages.

As we walked behind him, Jared pulled me to the side with a serious expression drawn on his face.

"Huh? What's wrong with you suddenly?"

I asked Jared, looking at Solon, who was giving me wireless distress signals before entering the carriage behind Julius.

"Listen to me, Selas." Jared grabbed my shoulders with an unrelenting firmness with the most serious look I've seen on his face as he continued, "You're smart."

"Eh?"

I blinked my eyes, confused by what he was saying.

"Solon may be stronger than you, but he's stupid and puts his trust in people easily, unlike you who can notice the hidden motives that drive others, so Selas, promise me that you'll take care of your brother when necessary." His firm grip on my shoulders shook my bones.

Oh, now I understand what he's trying to convey…

An incredulous smile appeared on my face and I nodded before I answered him, "You don't have to worry about that."
