Chapter 21: Crazy Bitch
"With this, I announce the end of this event…"
Sylvorine continued to speak for a few more minutes before she finished.
"…And the beginning of another!"
Everyone froze in their places out of surprise.
I wasn't any different.
Another event?
What the hell is this?
Everyone looked at the smiling Sylvorine on the stage for her to continue.
"As you all know, your ranking will not start until the end of the mid-term exams, and as the student council president, this matter bothers me."
And with amusement clear in her voice, she completed, "Due to the authority granted to me as the student council president, I made a slight modification to this system."
Fuck…
I wasn't prepared for any kind of surprise events to be honest.
In fact, I hate surprises!
But it seems that Sylvorine has a different opinion…
"To modify the system so that it fits with determining your ranking from now on, I have put a very simple event in place. In fact, I think it might start at any moment…"
I ignored the voices of the surprised and panicked people and focused on where we were.
I don't think many students have noticed this, but among us, there were a lot of curious second and third-year students who came to watch the entrance ceremony.
This was normal.
What was not normal was that I noticed these students pulling themselves out of the stage as quietly as possible…
As if they didn't want to get involved in whatever was happening.
For some reason, I felt a bad feeling about this.
To my left, I saw Liam putting his hand on his face wearily. Somehow, he looked as if he was familiar with what was happening here.
"Hey. Do you know what's going on here?" I tilted my head towards him and asked him.
He looked at me for a moment before shrugging and speaking as if he expected it, "All I can say is that it's going to get crazy from now on…"
"What does that even mean?" Ned asked in confusion, and Solon was no different.
Anyway, as soon as Liam finished speaking, a bright white light came out in the shape of a large magic circle that surrounded all the seats, causing everyone to be taken by surprise.
"What the hell is this?!"
"Run away!"
"Damn it! A trap?"
'It's an array!'
But its shape was not like ordinary arrays. The composition of this array was much more complex than the ordinary arrays I know.
As soon as I realized it was a double array, the glow of the array intensified and my consciousness began to slip away to another place.
Students fell unconscious in their seats and some on the floor. Next to me, I saw both Solon and Ned unconscious as well. Liam was the only one who showed some kind of resistance but he eventually gave in.
At the last remnants of my fading consciousness, I heard Sylvorine's voice echoing in the space.
"Do your best…"
She was still smiling.
✦
"Ugh."
A sudden headache invaded my head, causing me to clutch it in pain.
After a few moments, the pain subsided and clarity returned to my head.
And…where was I now?
The place I was in made me confused.
A hospital?
It looked as if I was on a hospital bed…
I got up from the bed and moved towards the window to take a look at the area in general.
In front of me, the space extended to what could be said to be a small city. Buildings of all different sizes spread everywhere in the shape of a large circle surrounded by a black barrier.
Nothing could be seen behind that tall black wall surrounding the city.
Nothing.
As if the world stopped at it…
'Damn it.'
An illusion.
It's an illusion array.
But why?
I didn't understand why we were all trapped inside this city and in this particular way.
"Hmm…" I rubbed my chin as I thought about what we might have to do to end this event.
We didn't even enter our fucking class and here we are trapped inside an illusion without any direction on what to do next.
The absurdity of the matter was astonishing, to say the least.
-"Wh- What do we do?"
-"I don't know either…"
I heard faint voices behind the door.
'Students?'
I quietly opened the door and was greeted by the sight of a long dark corridor that looked like it was inspired by a horror movie. In the middle of it, three students walked anxiously like lost children looking for their mothers.
I quickly closed the door and went back to the side of the bed where the metal IV pole stood.
I removed all the wires from it and took it in my hand as a weapon.
Whatever the essence of this whole event was, I was sure we would have to fight. Whether it was against illusionary monsters or against each other, so I felt it necessary to get a weapon early.
"Hmm, this thing is taller than me…"
I weighed the metal pole in my hand and tried to swing it and test it.
I won't lie, it was pretty bad as a weapon, but I felt like I was one of the lucky few to have a weapon, so I ignored it and went back to the window when I noticed something appearing in the sky.
There above, floating words appeared like those of a status screen, but it was large enough for everyone to see anywhere inside the enclosed city.
[Hello everyone!]
[I won't take long and I'll be clear. The city you are in now is a great illusion created specifically to trap the prisoners' consciousnesses inside and torture them by making them experience the feeling of death by killing each other over and over again until they become an empty shell of their former selves]
[But!]
[This time, this illusion array has been used in a slightly different way. The moment one of you dies here, his consciousness will be freed from the illusion and he will return to his real body, so don't worry!]
[Now that the situation you are in has been clarified, let me tell you why you are here]
[First, this event has been named "Free For All", which is a very simple event really. All you have to do is survive to the end only. If you do, you will be ranked as the first among all first-year students!]
[And if you are the first to be eliminated, you will be ranked as the last. Simple, isn't it?]
[You can stay inside the illusion forever if you want, but I advise you to hurry because your standing still does not necessarily mean that some will do the same…]
[And finally, there are no rules!]
[You can survive and try to kill in the way that suits you, consider this a real battlefield]
[Now, what are you waiting for? Start killing each other already!]
"…"
I stared at the sky with my eyes wide open, stunned.
I didn't even need to pull my facial expressions, the amount of absurdity written in the sky was more than enough to make more than five expressions spread across my face.
I wasn't complaining for myself, but for the other students.
Fifteen-year-old children…
That girl…
The candor with which she talks about murder makes it seem like a joke.
All this time, I thought the other protagonist was a bright person with a strong sense of justice. That was partly because of my stupid brother, so I can't be blamed.
But this…
"Ah. I understand now."
She's a crazy bitch.
Really.
From her perfect, permanent fake smile on her face to this, I can confidently say that she is a crazy bitch.
The kind of people who stab you in the back and kill you with an angelic smile on their faces…
"A real crazy bitch…"
✦
"My lady, are you sure about this?"
"Of course. I wouldn't do something like this if I wasn't sure about it."
Sylvorine answered with a smile to her maid's question as she looked at a floating screen that materialized from her watch and showed a city enclosed by a black barrier that erased the world behind it.
She had merged another magic array alongside the illusion array after all. An array that made everyone who carried the academy watch able to see the event from inside their rooms.
"But my lady, the words you presented the event with…"
"Hmm? Oh, about that. Don't worry, no one will see it unless they are inside the illusion themselves. And even if they said something about it, no one would believe them, although I doubt they would utter a word."
At her lady's response, the maid let out a sigh of relief. However, she still felt that what her lady did was very reckless.
It is true that Liam made her lady's interest rise, but testing him in this way?
She still saw it as a reckless move.
'What's so special about that boy anyway?'
