Chapter 37: Babies? Oh, I forgot
"Now, for my first question….."
Before I could complete my sentence, I sensed something, something eerie. My hairs stood, causing goosebumps.
Ignoring their faces, waiting for the impending question. They had tightened their grip, digging deep in their palms.
They were already in enough pain and discomfort, they didn't notice the eerie presence or likely they couldn't.
It confirmed that it wasn't them, they didn't know about whatever was lurking around. At least they would have been at ease then, they were bad at hiding their emotions. This much was already clear.
"Something is here, you feel it too right, Kaltain?, stay vigilant."
"Right back at you."
He sensed it too, whatever it was or whoever they were, making Planetoid Rank people on guard was a great feat. It proved their threat.
"What??, What is here?, are you guys trying to scare us?, but we already are, there is no nee..."
"Will you shut your mouth for a minute or should I pluck your tongue out."
His friends grabbed his mouth for him, making sure not even a grumble reached my ears. They were awfully competent sometimes.
I squinted my eyes, focusing on every nook and cranny of the room. It wasn't a room technically, a cave to be exact with several entrances connected by a ladder.
The ladders were for the entrances at the top, there were probably more than a hundred entrances. Possibly for every child that was on the cradles.
Abnormally there was nothing in those entrances, not finding any clues. My eyes wandered around the crevices of the cave. Cracked, small part of the cave system.
Within those crevices was nothing…except for pitch black darkness, I was going to ignore it until my eyes registered movement.
There was something moving in those crevices, something slimy, gooey, liquified substance but alive and moving.
"Kaltain?.... that's not a mortal right?"
Apparently he also located the slimy goo, that was not the point of attraction for the time being. Like he said that 'goo' was not mortal, if it were it wouldn't have made my hair stand.
That 'goo' was Planetoid Rank not just any too, but at the peak of Planetoid.
Something on my level, it has been ages since I fought something or someone of my level.
My body instinctively gathered cosmic energy enveloping it, I tightened my fist ready for battle.
Shocking me that 'goo' ran, or skidded or however it maneuvers. It just ran, leaving me stranded with my all time high emotions.
Or at least that's what I thought but to my surprise it actually didn't. All it did was take a safe space for its incoming attack.
The cave tremored, after a short while it started falling apart. Large chunks of debris started falling on the cradles behind, Azrael condensed cosmic energy forming miniature black holes to stop them from hurting the children inside.
The black holes scrunched the space, any debris which contacted their event horizon got devoured within seconds.
Even then the debris falled down relentlessly without any break, I joined him in his pursuit.
With a wave of my hand, I flattened the incoming chunks of the debris at one side, saving the babies in the process.
In midst of all the chunks and debris, lay the lifeless bodies of those experimenters. Both of us didn't care about them, actually saving them should have been the priority but I decided to help Azrael first.
"Thanks for saving the babies. It's a tragedy that we lost them."
"No worries, the next sector still remains. There should be a bunch of people like them."
Not just the next sector but the whole bronze level, it should contain rebels like these.
Why do I think so?, it's because they don't get enough credits to create such an intricate facility deep underground even if it is just labour intensive work.
These people barely get enough credits for medical as well as ration purposes, how would they build a whole ass cave system.
...
Suddenly we were attacked by multiple spear shaped tendrils, pitch black in colour like the 'goo'. Each having enough strength to decimate mountains with ease.
The spears attacked, stretching the air apart in the process at the speed of sound. There was not enough time to dodge them, as such I tanked as many hits as I could.
That 'goo' finally showed its face, when the whole cave broke. The view above became clearly visible, it was dawn, at its end too.
We came here in the morning now it was past dawn, funnily enough we haven't done jack sh*t.
Ignoring the useless thoughts. The 'goo' moved or whatever it did to locomote, it dripped..yeah it dripped like fluid from the crevices.
Finally forming a shape similar to us, to me to be exact. It tried to look humanoid but couldn't, its liquid body dripped on the ground before merging again forming an unstable form.
"It acts like ferrofluid, at least from the properties it showed, the way it moves and all."
"If that 'goo' is ferrofluid then it should be attracted to metals right?"
"Can't be sure about that, this one seems awfully attracted to humans."
He pointed at those lifeless corpses, which should have been there but currently they weren't.
"That bastard consumed them, as it did the babies."
Babies?, right we were protecting them. I had forgotten about them since something as interesting as this 'goo' came.
