"Shadows of Solitude"

Chapter 14: I'm not interested

Jin Shi slowly got up from his bed, his body still aching, but he ignored the pain the moment he smelled food. Everyone was seated at the table, and without hesitation, Jin Shi started eating in silence. He was so hungry that nothing else mattered.

As they ate, one of the gang members, named Charles, raised an eyebrow while observing Jin Shi closely. Charles was not just any ordinary member—he was still an active police officer, but in reality, he was a spy working for the gang.

With a quiet yet subtly threatening tone, he said,

"Aren't you afraid the food might be poisoned?"

Jin Shi paused for a moment before swallowing another bite, answering indifferently,

"If I die, that would be for the best."

Randa chuckled and said mockingly,

"You won't die that easily… You're too important to us."

Jin Shi didn't respond. Instead, he slowly lifted his head and stared at Charles. He noticed how relaxed the man was, as if he was enjoying watching their reactions. After a brief silence, Jin Shi asked with a faint but sharp tone,

"Did you steal a police badge?"

Charles smirked before replying sarcastically,

"Oh, really? I'm a cop, after all."

Silence filled the room for a few seconds before Hasok burst into laughter, slamming the table,

"What a fascinating sight! A police officer sitting among us like he belongs here!"

But Jin Shi wasn't joking—he felt something strange about Charles's demeanor. He wasn't like the others; he moved with confidence as if…

Charles smiled faintly and said,

"The truth is, I never lost my position… I'm still a cop."

Everyone stared at him intently as he continued,

"But I'm not a cop for them—I'm a cop for the gang."

Jin Shi glanced at Sohyun, who had been silently listening. Sohyun then set his spoon aside and spoke,

"Jin Shi, our gang isn't just a group of random criminals. We operate as an organized network, and we have people everywhere."

He paused for a moment before adding in a calm tone,

"We have men inside the government, in corporations, and even within the police force. We don't act recklessly—we make sure our influence reaches every crucial place, keeping us one step ahead at all times."

Jin Shi let out a tired yet sarcastic laugh before saying,

"So that's why I'm important, right? You couldn't find anyone better at hacking and computers than me?"

Hasok grinned excitedly, slamming the table again,

"Oh! You caught on quickly! Yes, you're very important because you'll help us break into anything we want!"

Jin Shi turned to Charles and asked in a calm voice,

"Aren't there others in the same division I'll be working in?"

Everyone exchanged glances before Randa responded with a sly smile,

"No… You're the only one."

Sohyun stepped closer, his voice quiet but carrying a sharp edge,

"Which means you'll be our right hand from now on."

Silence fell over the room as Jin Shi processed their words. He knew he was getting involved in something far bigger than he had anticipated.

Taking a deep breath, he looked at them all and smirked faintly before saying,

"So, when do we start?"

Here's the English translation of your text without errors:

Jin Shi finished his meal. One of the gang members asked, "Where are you going?"

Jin Shi didn't reply and simply raised his hand, saying with a smirk, "If you want me this badly, bring me a gift, like a rifle. That would make me happy."

So-hyun smiled, clearly pleased with this request.

While walking, Jin Shi saw an ambulance near his house. He ran towards it but suddenly heard one of the paramedics say, "Where is the old woman's relative?"

Jin Shi raised his hand, looking like a girl who had been depressed for a long time. The paramedic offered condolences, but Jin Shi didn't shed a tear. "We weren't that close anyway," he said casually.

Still, he asked, "What was the cause of death?"

The paramedic replied, "Suicide."

Jin Shi chuckled. "Suicide? She killed herself? She deserved it."

Then he asked, "Who found her?"

They told him she had jumped from above.

"Oh, I see," he responded indifferently.

Jin Shi was forced to arrange the funeral, at least out of obligation. After all, she had let him sleep in her house. He sat in the corner of the room, smoking, convinced that no one would attend the funeral because the old woman was not well-liked.

He didn't shed a single tear. He wasn't interested. To him, it was as if nothing had happened.

Then, So-hyun and his gang entered, all dressed in black out of respect. It was only natural that they showed up since a relative of one of their own had passed away.

So-hyun scanned the room, trying to find Jin Shi, but he was barely visible in the dim light. In a deep voice, So-hyun said, "Hey, man, where's my gift?"

Hansuk laughed. "What? Are you crying in the corner?"

Jin Shi stood up, placed his hand on So-hyun's shoulder, and said, "Since I'm part of your gang now, pay for the funeral hall. Oh, and don't forget my gift."

Then he walked away, playing with his lighter.

Randa sneered, "Ugh, that bastard."

So-hyun turned to Randa. "Pay the bill, and you and Hansuk, make sure he gets his gift."

Randa rolled her eyes and sighed. "Great, now we're just toys for the kid."

After leaving the funeral, Jin Shi walked through the neon-lit streets, his mind racing. He didn't care about the old woman's death, but he knew this was a turning point in his life. There was nothing tying him to the past anymore.

When he arrived at the gang's hideout, the atmosphere was quiet, everyone busy with their own tasks. Charles, the policeman who worked as their informant, sat in the corner smoking his cigarette, his eyes carefully observing everyone.

Jin Shi sat at the table and began dismantling his phone, thinking about hacking a new system for the gang. He noticed So-hyun's gaze fixed on him and said without looking up:

"Do you have something to say?"

So-hyun smirked and replied:

"You adapt quickly."

"Did you expect me to sit in the corner and cry?"

So-hyun chuckled. "No, but I didn't expect you to ask for a rifle as a gift."

Jin Shi raised an eyebrow. "So, am I getting it or not?"

Hansuk entered carrying a wooden box, placed it in front of Jin Shi, and said:

"Here's your gift."

Jin Shi opened the box. Inside was a sleek black rifle. He picked it up slowly, examining it carefully, then, for the first time in a long while, he smiled.

"Finally, something worth my attention."

Charles watched him silently before saying in a calm voice:

"Aren't you afraid it might be poisoned?"

Jin Shi glanced at him, then laughed. "If I die, that would be even better."

Randa sighed and said:

"You're important to us. You can't die yet."

Jin Shi lifted the rifle slightly in his hand, then smirked.

"Alright then, let's see just how important I really am to you all..."
