Chapter 5: Chapter 05 F to pay respects

The midday sun cast sharp shadows over the training field as I rolled my shoulders, loosening up.

First up—chakra control.

I stepped onto a tree trunk and channeled chakra to my feet. The familiar sticky sensation took hold, but immediately, I noticed the difference—my reserves felt fuller, more responsive.

I tested my control, adjusting the flow carefully. No accidents. No overshooting. Just a smooth, controlled ascent up the tree, faster than before.

I exhaled, pleased. Not bad. Let's refine it further.

A quick launch. A flip midair. A precise landing on another branch. My movements were sharper, my balance better—this wasn't just an increase in chakra. My body was adapting quickly.

A kunai thudded into a tree just ahead of me.

"Your control has improved," a familiar voice noted.

I turned. Minato-sensei.

He was perched casually on a branch, arms crossed, watching with quiet approval. There was no obvious praise, but his presence alone meant he was acknowledging my effort.

I straightened and gave a respectful nod. "Thank you, Sensei."

Minato hopped down, a thoughtful look on his face. "Would you like to spar?"

A spar with the Yellow Flash? An opportunity to test my growth under real pressure?

I wasn't about to refuse.

I stepped into my stance, focused and ready.

"Yes, Sensei."

Let's see how far I can push myself.

I took a steady breath, focusing as I shifted into my stance. Minato-sensei stood a few meters away, relaxed but alert.

"Ready?" he asked, his tone light, but I wasn't fooled. Minato-sensei never underestimated anyone, not even a student.

I nodded. "Yes, Sensei."

The moment the words left my mouth, he vanished.

Fast!

I barely caught the flicker of movement before a kunai whizzed past my face. I twisted, dodging on instinct, but—

He's already behind me!

I ducked as a hand reached for my shoulder. In a blur, I rolled forward, putting distance between us. My heart pounded.

Minato-sensei wasn't even going full speed, yet I was already struggling to react.

If I don't counter, I'll be on the defensive the entire match.

I pushed chakra into my legs and launched forward, closing the gap in a heartbeat. A feint to the left—then a sharp pivot as I aimed a strike at his ribs.

My kunai met air.

I had a fraction of a second to process that Minato-sensei had already moved again before a tap landed on my shoulder.

"You're dead," he said, smiling.

I exhaled. Not in frustration, but in understanding.

He wasn't just fast—he was untouchable.

And that meant—if I wanted to truly stand a chance, I had to be smarter.

I took a step back and adjusted my stance. "Again, Sensei."

Minato's smile widened just a little.

"Alright, Kakashi. Show me what you've got."

Adapting to the Yellow Flash

The second round began.

This time, I didn't wait for Minato-sensei to make the first move.

I hurled a kunai straight at him, but I wasn't expecting it to land. It was a distraction—a way to force movement. As expected, he sidestepped effortlessly.

That was my opening.

I surged forward, using my boosted chakra reserves to push my speed beyond my usual limits. A kunai in my right hand, a feint with my left—then a sudden pivot to strike his blind spot.

Except…

My kunai met nothing but air.

A blur of yellow filled my vision, and before I could react—

Tap.

Minato's finger lightly touched my forehead.

"Dead again," he said, amused.

I barely stopped myself from groaning.

Come on, Kakashi. Think. If speed won't work, what will?

I exhaled and reset my stance. Time to change tactics.

That's when I noticed something.

My breathing wasn't labored. My muscles weren't screaming at me. Even after pushing myself harder than ever before, my body wasn't sluggish or slow. It was adapting.

I blinked.

Wait.

This wasn't just a stamina boost. This was something deeper. My reflexes, my movements—even the way I recovered—everything was adjusting in real-time.

Like my body was learning as fast as my mind.

I hadn't just been keeping up with Minato-sensei—I'd been improving mid-fight.

I clenched my fist. This is what it means to be a genius.

Not just talent. Not just skill.

But the ability to evolve instantly.

Kakashi is really a genius.

I exhaled slowly and took a step back. Time to change the game.

Minato-sensei raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?" he mused. "Trying something new?"

I didn't answer. Words were unnecessary.

Instead, I subtly adjusted my grip on my kunai. My stance lowered slightly. I made every part of my body language deliberately misleading.

Minato-sensei's smile deepened. He noticed.

Good.

Because this time, I was going to make sure he walked into my trap.

I let my muscles relax just a little, keeping my stance loose. If I tensed too much, Minato-sensei would notice.

Alright, Kakashi. Think. You're up against a man who moves faster than your Wi-Fi connection and has reflexes sharper than a last-minute student realizing they forgot an assignment.

You can't outspeed him. You can't outmaneuver him.

But you can make him think you're predictable.

I rushed forward again, kunai in hand. Same approach. Same speed. Same footwork.

Minato-sensei didn't even move right away. He was waiting for me to commit—waiting for the moment I'd strike so he could disappear like before.

Classic boss fight behavior. He's already figured out my attack pattern and is waiting to punish my next move.

Which means… I just need to break the pattern.

At the last possible moment, I twisted my body mid-lunge, adjusting my kunai's trajectory by mere inches—not at him, but at the ground.

Chakra flow. Timing. Precision.

The kunai bounced off the dirt, spinning into the air—right where Minato had just teleported.

For the first time in this entire match—his eyes widened.

A glint of metal. A fraction of hesitation.

I had forced him to react.

Oh my god. I just made Minato-sensei flinch. That's like making a pro gamer misclick.

I pivoted sharply, following up with a second attack before he could fully regain his footing. My kunai streaked toward him, and for just a second—I thought I had him.

But then—

A blur.

A shift in the wind.

And once again—

Tap.

I froze.

Minato-sensei's finger rested lightly against my forehead, his expression unreadable. Then, after a moment—

He smiled.

"That," he said, lowering his hand, "was excellent, Kakashi."

I exhaled, rolling my shoulders back. "I still lost."

Minato chuckled. "Maybe. But you forced me to move differently. That's not something just anyone can do." He gave me an approving nod. "You're adapting quickly. That's a sign of true genius."

I blinked.

…Did I just impress Minato-sensei?

I looked down at my hands, flexing my fingers.

I was this close to landing a hit on one of the strongest shinobi in history.

Holy crap, I might actually be cracked at this ninja thing.

I wasn't there yet.

But I would be.

One day, I'll surpass even you, Sensei.

Minato-sensei took a step back, still smiling like he hadn't just styled on me for the last ten minutes.

"That's enough for today," he said. "You did well, Kakashi."

I nodded, trying to look cool and composed—like I wasn't internally screaming about the fact that I'd almost landed a hit on a man who moves at the speed of plot convenience.

Minato glanced at the sky. "You should rest. Overworking yourself won't help you improve faster."

I wanted to argue, but let's be honest—I was running on the fumes of a chakra pill and sheer pettiness.

Still, I couldn't just admit that.

So I settled for nodding. "Understood, Sensei."

Minato gave me an approving pat on the shoulder before disappearing in a yellow flash.

I sighed.

One day, I'm going to learn how to do that. And when I do, I'm going to teleport behind someone and whisper 'nothing personal, kid.'

I turned back toward the training ground, rolling my shoulders. My body still felt fine. Not sore, not exhausted.

It was weird.

Back home—well, old home—if I had a day like this, I'd be dead on my feet, needing three energy drinks and a solid twelve-hour nap to recover. But now? I could keep going.

Which meant—

I should probably train more.

Which also meant—

I am absolutely going to ignore Minato-sensei's advice to rest.

I cracked my neck, stretching my arms.

"Alright," I muttered to myself. "Time to see what else this body can do."
