Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 276: Chapter 273

"Whoo..."

Chris suddenly opened his eyes, scanning his surroundings. Everything looked the same as it had when he fell asleep last night, and he let out a sigh of relief.

He suppressed the cold and crawled out of his sleeping bag. The movement immediately woke up the person sleeping with him in the same snow cave—Number Two.

"Hmm?" Number Two abruptly opened his eyes, tensing up and reaching for his military knife. When he saw it was Chris, he relaxed and greeted him, "Captain, good morning!"

"Good morning. Pack up, we're getting ready to move out," Chris said as he gathered up his sleeping bag, tightly tying it with a rope.

"This sleeping bag is really warm. I slept so comfortably last night." Number Two said as he got up.

"I heard this sleeping bag was made in limited quantities—only around twenty or so. Apparently, the raw materials weren't enough, so they couldn't produce them on a larger scale." Chris recalled what Jack had told him. He also heard these sleeping bags weren't cheap.

That night, when Jack brought them supplies from the logistics department, he had specifically reminded them that anything they could bring back, they should bring back, and anything they couldn't, they should destroy—like the entrenching tools and sleeping bags.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk... Captain, the gear we've brought on this trip must be worth at least a dozen or more gold coins." Number Two remarked with awe.

"Mm!" Chris nodded, feeling the box in his chest, inside which was a high-quality binocular. It was probably worth at least a thousand gold coins, if not more.

Once they were packed, they knocked open the snow sealing the entrance of the snow cave, and a rush of cold air poured in. Both of them shivered slightly before crawling out of the cave.

Two minutes later, the rest of the team crawled out of the cave as well and immediately started boiling water to prepare breakfast.

"Number Seven, Number Eight, go check if the target has left yet." Chris ordered.

"Got it!" Number Seven and Number Eight, armed with their recurve bows, put on white clothes and silently crept toward the cave where Karl and the fox beastkin were staying.

Before they could get close, they saw Karl and the fox beastkin emerge from the cave. They quickly scanned the area behind them, prompting Number Seven and Number Eight to cover their heads with the white cloth.

"We didn't catch up. Hurry up and head out. We can reach Blade Edge City in half a day." Karl said, stretching his body before setting off in the correct direction.

"Yes!" The fox beastkin followed closely behind.

A few minutes later, after they had moved on, Number Seven and Number Eight lifted their white clothes. They exchanged a look, nodded, and turned to return and report back.

"They're here? What's the situation? Are they still there?" Chris asked as he handed two cups of compressed military rations to the two men.

Huff, huff... Number Seven blew on the steaming rations and replied, "They just left."

"Quick, eat up, then we move out immediately. We need to make it look more convincing today." Chris said, picking up his own cup from the snow, blowing on the hot air, and quickly eating.

Soon, all eight of them finished their breakfast, packed their gear, and set off to chase after Karl and the fox beastkin.

As they traveled, Chris kept an eye on their surroundings, occasionally marking hidden spots on trees. These would serve as markers for their return to Sedona City.

Another half-day passed as they continued their pursuit, and the trees began to thin out, signaling that they were getting close to their target.

"Captain, should we leave something behind for them?" Number Seven asked while holding his recurve bow.

Chris paused, thinking for a moment. He grabbed the binocular and focused on the two figures running through the trees. "Shoot the fox beastkin in the arm, preferably both of them. One arrow in each of their arms."

"Hehehe... Leave it to us!" Number Seven and Number Eight exchanged glances, then swiftly moved forward, their recurve bows in hand.

"Everyone, rest up. In half an hour at most, they'll send out their knights." Chris said, signaling for the others to get ready.

Chris gave the order, holding his binoculars and scanning the distant Blade Edge City. His eyes narrowed as he focused on the slaves outside the city. He could see many of them lying motionless on the ground, some half-buried under snow, all dead from the cold.

"Understood!"

Someone began melting snow in an iron cup to boil water. They were currently in a small forest not far from Blade Edge City.

Huff, huff…

Karl and the fox beastkin were panting heavily. They only needed to break through this small forest to reach Blade Edge City, and they would be safe.

"Run faster, Blade Edge City is ahead." Karl urged, his voice low.

"Yes!" The fox beastkin responded hoarsely.

After a while, the two of them finally broke through the trees. Seeing Blade Edge City in the distance, their faces lit up with joy. They glanced back at the forest, feeling a sense of triumph.

Karl and the fox beastkin's eyes narrowed when they saw two people standing at the edge of the woods, their bows drawn and aimed directly at them.

Whoosh, whoosh!!

"Run!" Karl shouted loudly, leaping forward. He immediately felt a sharp pain in his arm.

He quickly realized he had been shot with an arrow. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the fox beastkin had also been struck, the arrow lodged in his shoulder, and the beastkin was now ahead of him.

"Damn it!" Karl cursed under his breath as he sprinted for his life. Those damn bandits had silently followed them all the way here.

The two of them, clutching their wounds, barely made it back to Blade Edge City…

"You missed!" Number Seven lowered his bow and said. "If you'd aimed a little better, that beastkin would've been dead."

"Misfire, misfire!" Number Eight muttered, shaking his hand. The cold weather had affected his aim.

"Let's go. The rest is just waiting." Number Seven said, turning and walking back into the woods.

Not far from them, in another small forest, Aiden raised a pair of binoculars, observing the movements of Number Seven and Number Eight. He then shifted his gaze toward Blade Edge City. He had arrived three hours earlier.

"Now, we just wait for the execution of the 'draw the tiger away from the mountain' plan," Aiden said, putting down the binoculars. He turned to look at the soldiers crouching in the woods. These men would be the main force escorting the slaves.

Meanwhile, inside Blade Edge City, Santner sat with a dark expression, listening to Karl's account, with occasional interruptions from the fox beastkin who added a few details.

"So you're telling me... that the Swiftwind Bandits killed Freya? And they took the treasure map?" Santner suddenly stood up, his golden eyes filled with fury.

"Yes, but the Swiftwind Bandits, in order to silence us, have already chased us to the outskirts of Blade Edge City." Karl hurriedly replied. He knew if he didn't speak fast enough, he might end up dead.

"Silence us? How many of them are there?" Santner asked with a cold expression.

"About a hundred or so." Karl quickly answered.

"A hundred?" Santner sneered, "Such boldness."

Santner glanced at the arrows embedded in Karl and the fox beastkin's arms, then said coldly, "Go treat your wounds! Then, take two hundred and fifty beastkin knights and go get that treasure map back for me."

"Yes!" Karl and the fox beastkin sighed in relief, knowing they had passed this test.
