Chapter 11: The First Trial
Night had fallen...
11:57 PM...
Jiho sat cross-legged on the cold floor, his eyes closed in deep thought. The dimly lit room was silent, save for the steady rhythm of his breathing.
He had spent the entire day revisiting the memories of the young man, reflecting on this place and everything connected to it. From what he observed now, this world was called Erdan, strikingly similar to the world he once lived in, called Terra.
For example, the history of the Challengers, whom he once knew as gods, and the way humanity's lineage had evolved, were the only aspects that seemed somewhat different.
Suddenly, a mechanical voice echoed in his mind.
He had been waiting for this moment—the moment when everything would change.
[Welcome to the System...]
Jiho's eyes snapped open as a glowing blue screen materialized in front of him, floating ominously in the air. Despite knowing this moment would come, the eerie glow of the system's interface made his heart race.
[This realm has been designated as a Trial Area...]
The words flickered across the screen. He exhaled sharply, steadying himself.
[In 3 minutes, all inhabitants of this realm will be transported to their respective Trial Zones...]
A countdown timer appeared beneath the message, ticking away with merciless precision.
[02:59... 02:58...]
Jiho's expression remained calm. The trial he had been preparing for was finally upon him.
[Upon entering the first trial, all participants will be officially recorded as system characters...]
Jiho watched as the message dissolved, followed by another prompt:
[Character Profile Initialization in Progress...]
[ERROR!]
The red letters flashed across the screen like a warning siren.
[Unknown error detected...]
[Unable to assign identity...]
Jiho's heart skipped a beat.
[Character Profile Creation Failed...]
He stared at the words, disbelief flooding his mind. Something was wrong—terribly wrong. A sudden, searing heat erupted from his left hand, jolting him back to reality. He looked down to see the faint, black ring-shaped mark on his palm glowing ominously.
"What... is this?" Jiho whispered, his voice laced with panic.
The heat intensified, and before he could react, dark energy burst from the mark, swirling chaotically in the air. It spiraled around him like a raging storm, growing in size and ferocity. Jiho's heart pounded as the dark energy twisted violently, forming into a monstrous, gaping mouth.
The creature roared silently, and in one swift motion, it lunged at the glowing blue screen.
CRUNCH!
The system screen shattered into fragments, dissolving into the void as the dark energy consumed it entirely. The room was plunged into darkness for a brief moment.
Then, the darkness coalesced into a new form. A black screen materialized before him, its surface gleaming like an endless void. The text that began to appear was jagged and uneven, as though it were carved from shadows.
[Personal Profile Created…]
Jiho blinked, his breath shaky as new text began appearing on the black screen:
Name: Han Jiho
Title: ??? (Mythic)
Abilities / Skills: [??? Lv.max], [Clear Mind Lv.1], [Combat Mastery Lv.3], [Weapon Mastery Lv.2], [Adaptability Lv.5]
Overall stats: [Strength Lv.5], [Agility Lv.5], [Stamina Lv.8], [Willpower Lv.2], [Aether Lv.0]
"What is this...?" Jiho muttered, his voice trembling with confusion and awe.
[Proceeding with Trial Transfer...]
Before Jiho could fully process the words, the countdown resumed.
[00:05... 00:04...]
His surroundings blurred, his body feeling weightless as the black screen's message flickered one final time.
[Trial Zone 73: Sunset Park]
Jiho was swallowed by the void, his senses overwhelmed by a rushing vortex of light and shadows.
As he regained consciousness, he found himself in a vast park teeming with people.
Suddenly, a loud voice boomed inside their heads, and blue screens appeared in front of them, causing everyone to stagger and panic as their locations shifted. Despite the chaos, a few individuals stood tall, their gazes unwavering as they assessed their surroundings.
"Welcome, Challengers…"
Jiho, turning his head to the side, watched as a blinding white light filled the sky, growing so intense that it seemed to outshine the very heavens.
When the light finally disappeared…
He saw it—a massive, unknown creature with three white wings and a single, colossal eye. Its eerie presence was enough to strike terror into the hearts of the gathered people. The vast majority panicked and scattered, but a few remained, kneeling in awe before the creature.
In the midst of this chaos, a loud, deep voice suddenly boomed, shaking the very ground beneath them.
The sound wasn't just heard by those who stayed; even those who had fled were forced to halt as the overwhelming voice filled their ears, compelling them to cover their heads. The intensity of the sound continued, and in mere moments, the ground beneath them began to tremble, making the participants lose their balance and stagger as if caught in a swirling vortex.
When the sound finally ceased, only a handful of people, including Jiho, were able to stand firm. The others, unable to keep their footing, lay sprawled on the ground, struggling to regain their balance.
Jiho stood motionless, his sharp gaze fixed on the towering creature above. Its three white wings fanned out majestically, but its massive single eye radiated an oppressive presence, pinning the participants to the ground.
The voice from the unknown monster filled the air once again, silencing everything within the park.
"The First Trial begins in five minutes…"
The reminder pulled Jiho's attention back. He clenched his fists, suppressing the unease creeping into his chest. It wasn't the creature or its voice that unnerved him—it was the lack of clarity about the monsters they were about to face.
"Challengers, remember: You must eliminate three Shadow Beasts within two hours. Fail, and you will be eliminated…"
"Use the command "Character Profile" to view your stats and skills. This information is private and cannot be seen by others. Rewards will be given based on performance."
Around him, people scrambled, murmuring the command aloud. Jiho, however, stayed still. He had already checked his profile during the initialization. But wasn't his situation different from the others?
As the conversation came to an end, white lights began to emerge, and the mysterious giant figure in the sky vanished.
The countdown had also begun.
"Time remaining until Shadow Beast arrival: 5 minutes…"
Jiho noticed movement from the corner of his eye. People were gathering into groups, instinctively seeking strength in numbers. It made sense; facing unknown monsters alone was reckless, especially for those still shaken by the earlier voice.
"Hey, you!"
Jiho turned his head slightly. A man was pointing at him, flanked by a group of five.
"Come join us. It's safer together…"
Jiho ignored him and started walking away.
"Wait…"
"I'm better on my own…" Jiho said without stopping, his voice calm but firm. He understood their reasoning, but trust wasn't something he could afford to give so easily—not here, not now.
He found a quieter corner of the park, away from the main clusters of people. Leaning against a tree, he closed his eyes, reviewing the trial's conditions in his mind.
Killing three monsters in two hours…
He had no idea how strong these Shadow Beasts were, but his instincts told him they wouldn't be pushovers.
"I'll manage," Jiho muttered to himself.
As he opened his eyes, his sharp senses caught movement in the distance. Three figures were approaching. Jiho recognized them immediately—they were the only other people who had remained standing during the unknown monster's oppressive voice.
One of them, a tall man with gray hair and an air of confidence, stopped a few paces away from Jiho. He studied him silently for a moment before speaking.
"You're not with anyone," the man said. It wasn't a question.
Jiho raised an eyebrow. "And?"
The man's lips curled into a faint smile. "Neither are we. Let's keep it that way."
Jiho's eyes flicked to the two people standing behind the man—a tall, lean man with short-cropped dark hair, his face expressionless and sharp, exuding an air of quiet danger. Beside him stood a woman with raven-black hair tied back in a loose ponytail, her eyes cold and calculating, her body language brimming with restrained power. They didn't look like the type to rely on others either.
The gray-haired man nodded in acknowledgment before leading his group further into the park. Jiho watched them go, a small part of him curious about their abilities. But for now, his priority was survival.
[Time remaining: 1 minute.]
The air grew heavier, and a faint, inky mist began to rise from the ground. Jiho tensed, his senses on high alert. The mist thickened, coiling and twisting into dark shapes. Slowly, the forms of the Shadow Beasts began to emerge.
The first trial has finally begun.
