Chapter 12: A Test of Strength and Strategy
[Time remaining: 40 seconds]
[Time remaining: 39 seconds]
As the time was drawing near, the shadow beasts gradually began to appear more distinctly.
Jiho glanced at the people who were waiting to pass the trial after forming their teams. Each team consisted of at least (8) to (10) members, representing a variety of ages and ethnicities. However, there were also exceptions, such as individuals who were alone, like the three people Jiho had encountered earlier.
To be honest, Jiho himself didn't want to be alone. However, the two black screen windows that appeared when the trial countdown began had forced him to do so. The others couldn't see those black screen windows; only he could.
[Total Challengers: 326]
[Remaining Shadow Beasts: 500]
According to the black screen window, there were [326] challengers and [500] shadow beasts. Since each person needed to defeat at least three shadow beasts, it meant that roughly half of the people would be eliminated.
Living in groups would be safer, but it wasn't easy to personally kill the shadow beasts amidst so many people. So, despite the danger, Jiho chose to remain alone.
[Time Up]
As the system voice indicated that time was up, a group of shadow beasts resembling jackals rushed toward the people. At first, the challengers were frightened, but after seeing the Jackal shadow beasts, their fear began to subside.
A battle broke out between the shadow beasts and the challengers. Fortunately, the shadow beasts would disappear after being struck a few times, vanishing into thin air without a trace. Although killing them wasn't difficult, their speed and sudden attacks posed a serious threat.
Many people formed groups to fight and kill the shadow beasts, but because they were using bare hands, some still died due to being caught off guard.
More than half an hour had passed, but Jiho hadn't yet joined the battle. He was observing the black screen windows floating in the air, calculating the remaining time and waiting for the right moment. Once the opportunity arrived, he could use dark energy to enhance his strength and speed, allowing him to fight effectively.
Even if one charges in quickly and manages to kill numerous shadow beasts, wouldn't it be quite foolish to die due to a single lapse in attention? Jiho had already witnessed two people who died in such a way while observing. Furthermore, since there were still many shadow beasts remaining, there was no need to rush at this stage.
[Total Challengers: 293]
[Remaining Shadow Beasts: 317]
As the battle raged on, Jiho noticed a shadow beast that had broken away from a group. However, he wasn't the only one to see it. The gray-haired man he had seen earlier, along with a few others, noticed it as well.
"It's time…" Jiho thought as the dark energy within his body filled him with strength and speed, doubling his physical capabilities for a brief moment. This boost would last for only 15 minutes, but it was enough to take down the shadow beast before him.
Without hesitation, he attacked the shadow beast, using his body's enhanced strength to strike it down. The shadow beast disappeared into smoke, leaving no trace behind.
Jiho himself was taken aback, not expecting such a turn of events. Despite the shadow beast having been struck and almost on the verge of vanishing, his own body's movements and strength were faster than he had anticipated. The contrast between his former self and the gangster body he now possessed was undeniable—his new body was lighter, more powerful, and more responsive.
[Total kills: 1]
[kill 2 more shadow beasts to complete the Trial…]
After killing the first shadow beast, the black screen window appeared with a message.
At that moment, Jiho saw two more shadow beasts charging toward him from the corner of his eye. He quickly ran and attacked, but both shadow beasts easily dodged his strikes.
Jiho wasn't surprised. He had studied their movements, and these shadow beasts were incredibly fast. Even with his enhanced speed, he wasn't confident in taking them down alone.
However, it could be said that his goal was achieved. As Jiho had planned, the two shadow beasts that had intercepted his attack veered off, scattering in different directions. Afterward, the shadow beast that had moved farther away from him shifted its focus to the group approaching the area, and no longer tried to engage with him.
The group of around four people, led by the gray-haired man, found themselves closest to the shadow beast that had evaded. A confrontation broke out. The three others surrounded the shadow beast, while the gray-haired man moved in from the side to strike. As the shadow beast, still attempting to evade, was forced into a corner, it was struck and quickly dissipated into a cloud of mist, vanishing within moments.
[Total Kills: 3]
[You have completed the Trial…]
[Kill more shadow beasts to get better rewards…]
The gray-haired man smiled as he looked at the blue screen window in front of his eyes. Having already killed three shadow beasts, he no longer needed to worry about being eliminated. His gaze then shifted toward Jiho, who was engaged in a battle with another shadow beast. The man's eyes reflected interest as he observed the scene.
Jiho was currently waiting for an opening, skillfully dodging the remaining shadow beast's attacks while keeping his focus. The shadow beast's speed was faster than his, so he had to be cautious and couldn't afford any mistakes.
Suddenly, the shadow beast leaped, aiming to strike Jiho with its claws. Jiho quickly swerved his body to the side, evading the attack and using his strength to land a blow to the beast's stomach. The strike was solid, and the shadow beast was launched into the air, disintegrating into mist and vanishing.
With that, the dark energy swirling within Jiho's body began to calm down. His strength and speed were clearly reduced compared to earlier.
[Total Kills: 2]
[Kill one more shadow beast to complete Trial…]
[Total Challengers: 286]
[Remaining Shadow Beasts: 223]
[01:03]
Jiho glanced at the black screen windows floating in the air and smiled. He only needed to kill one more shadow beast to complete the trial.
"You're stronger than I expected…" The gray-haired man walked over to Jiho and spoke. "My name is Lira Venn… I'm from Auralis Country… And you are…"
Jiho looked at the person named Lira Venn, who had gray hair. Normally, he wouldn't have understood his words. Fortunately, after the System appeared, despite the language differences, everyone could understand each other's speech. This meant he no longer had to worry about communication.
"Jiho… Han Jiho… What do you want from me?" Jiho asked, his demeanor unchanged. He had no intention of engaging in a long conversation. He was more focused on finding the last shadow beast and completing the trial quickly. Once done, he planned to find a safe spot to wait until the trial ended.
"You fight well… I want you to join our team… These shadow beasts may not be dangerous, but you'll see how difficult it is to kill them as the trial progresses. Many of the people here are so focused on surviving that they've forgotten the main point of the Trial…" Lira Venn continued, speaking earnestly.
"If you don't kill at least three shadow beasts within the next two hours, you'll fail the trial. But if you join us, it won't be difficult to surpass the required number of kills. What do you think?" Lira Venn added, offering Jiho a chance to collaborate.
Jiho understood that Lira Venn words were true. The main challenge of the trial wasn't just surviving the attacks of the shadow beasts. The real test was how many you could kill.
Having already killed two shadow beasts, he only needed to kill one more to complete the trial. Since his strength and speed were no longer increasing due to his diminishing dark energy, accepting Lira Venn's offer seemed to be the best choice.
"Alright… I'll join, but you need to let me kill the next shadow beast we encounter. You'll have seen that I killed two shadow beasts earlier… So, I only need one more for the trial to be complete. The rest are all yours," Jiho said.
The three people behind Lira Venn shifted slightly, startled by Jiho's words. They were concerned that they might not meet the required kill count in time, as the shadow beasts were quite difficult to defeat.
"Fine… we agree. We hope you'll help us by sharing your strength," Lira Venn said after a brief discussion with the others.
"I'll do my best..." Jiho didn't make too many promises but was determined to give it his all.
As soon as he finished speaking, they all nodded in acknowledgment and, as a group of five, dashed forward together.
