Chapter 55: Suspicions and Betrayal
Julian slammed the tablet onto his desk, his jaw clenched. The article was spreading like wildfire every media outlet was picking up the allegations. Years of carefully built power and reputation were crumbling in real time.
His mind raced through the possibilities. Only a few people had access to that level of confidential information. And one of them was Emily.
Grabbing his phone, he dialed her number. It rang once twice then her soft voice answered.
"Julian?" Her tone was cautious, as if she already knew why he was calling.
"Did you do it?" His voice was cold, sharper than he intended.
A beat of silence. "What are you talking about?"
"The article, Emily! Someone leaked classified documents. Who else could've done it?"
"I didn't" she began, but Julian cut her off.
"You had the motive. The access. Are you seriously telling me you had nothing to do with this?" His anger burned, fueled by the fear that he'd trusted the wrong person.
Emily stood in her apartment, heart pounding. She had seen the article too, but hearing the accusation from Julian stung. "I told you I wouldn't publish without talking to you first," she said firmly. "Why would I destroy everything between us?"
His silence felt heavier than his words. "Because it's your job," he said bitterly. "I was a story to you from the beginning, wasn't I?"
Tears burned at the back of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. "I trusted you," she whispered. "And I thought you trusted me."
Julian closed his eyes, torn between logic and emotion. His heart wanted to believe her but the evidence pointed in the opposite direction. And trust wasn't something he gave easily.
"I need time to figure out who's behind this," he finally said, his voice distant. "I can't afford mistakes."
Emily's chest tightened. "And what am I, Julian? A mistake?"
His hesitation cut her deeper than any answer could. "Goodbye, Emily," he said quietly before the line went dead.
As tears slipped down her face, Emily knew one thing whoever leaked those documents wanted to drive a wedge between them. And it was working.
In the shadows, Marcus watched the fallout with satisfaction. His plan was unfolding perfectly. And soon, everything Julian Blackwood cared about would be his to destroy.
