Chapter 104: Teach Patronus charm
We left Hagrid after everyone promised to help him with the upcoming trial that would determine whether or not Buckbeak would receive the death penalty.
Even though I wish for a different outcome, I know there is little chance that Hagrid will be able to save Buckbeak, so I am preparing a plan B.
Hermione, Marie, and I headed to the Ravenclaw common room to take care of Hermione's new cat, Crookshanks.
"It's just too bad that Ron doesn't like him because he keeps going after Scabbers."
"Crookshanks can't help it; it's in a cat's nature to hunt rats and mice."
"That's what I told him, but he's too attached to his rat to see things objectively."
"Sometimes, love for something makes us forget common sense. He has spent almost his entire life with that rat, so it feels like a member of his family to him."
Crookshanks may not have naturally had a cheerful face, but he seemed to enjoy being in my arms and refused to be held by Marie, much to her great dismay.
"Anyway, I prefer dogs."
She stuck out her tongue at Hermione's cat.
Unlike Ron, I know she doesn't hold a real grudge against Crookshanks because she understands that animals are afraid of her for some reason. After what happened an hour ago, I think the reason is her royal aura.
Another day passed, and Hermione thanked us every day for showing her the Room of Requirement, as she was already struggling to keep up with the workload and find time to sleep.
"Use this room as much as you want, but I warn you that Marie and I will be using it a little as well for our studies."
Since she would be here most of the time, I decided to teach Marie and Hermione the Patronus Charm.
"The most important thing for this charm to work is to have a happy memory. Of course, the strength of the Patronus depends on the happiness of the memory. There are several stages of the Patronus: mist, shield, corporeal form, and the true Patronus. The last one hasn't been seen in a long time because it requires not only a great amount of energy but also a memory so happy that it could be considered as strong as a hundred happy memories at once."
Hermione raised her hand to ask me a question as if we were in class.
"Are you saying that, with your parallel thoughts, you could summon a true Patronus?"
"No, because I don't have enough power, and I also don't have a happy memory strong enough to achieve it. Even if I had both, I doubt I could do it, because the brain must not see it as multiple very happy memories but as one single, overwhelmingly happy memory."
I would have loved to see a true one.
"The easiest way to train is either in front of a boggart or against a real Dementor, but for the latter, you can't afford to make mistakes."
The only boggart in the school that I know of belongs to Professor Lupin, who uses it for practical lessons to teach the Riddikulus charm.
"We'll train without anything for now, but until you can summon a corporeal Patronus, I forbid you from using it unless it's an extreme emergency."
We didn't have much time because we had to go to our DADA class, while Hermione was heading to her Ancient Runes class.
"I wonder what my real fear is?"
She said this as if she wasn't afraid of anything.
"Aren't you afraid of losing me?"
"Yes, but I know I won't lose you because I'll make sure of it. And you, Evelyn, do you know what your real fear is?"
"I have several, but I just want to see if I can create the same effect alone as when I'm in a group."
If a Boggart faces a group, it won't know what to transform into and will create an amalgamation of all possible fears.
