Chapter 23: Chapter 23: A Terminal Case of Stockholm Syndrome

Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin, sat on the floor, his fear still unshaken.

The man in the trench coat and mask, who looked like a mobster from the last century, was undoubtedly the most terrifying person he had ever encountered!

Guns and bullets were useless against him?!

And what was with that bizarre speed? He disappeared in an instant!

The dozen or so henchmen outside hadn't noticed a thing!

The Penguin was utterly despairing. The more he thought about it, the more terrified he became.

This meant the man could appear beside him at any moment and kill him with ease.

When facing an enemy of equal strength who temporarily gains the upper hand, the best course of action is to yield and strike back later. Victory is still possible.

But when your opponent is someone who can effortlessly destroy everything, the only thing to do is bow your head. It's okay to be a little obsequious.

Survival is what matters most.

In the Penguin's mind, Peter was now that kind of terrifying existence.

In comparison, the recent rising hero of Gotham, Batman, seemed like an angel.

At least if you were caught by him, you could survive.

Being sent to prison and eventually released was just a matter of time.

As the Penguin calmed down, he couldn't help but feel regret!

"Damn you, Dice! This is all your fault!!"

"If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have provoked such a terrifying guy!!"

Just then, Peter's voice echoed in the room.

"Who are you calling terrifying?"

The Penguin shuddered as if struck by a sudden shock.

In the blink of an eye, Peter had returned.

"Sir, why are you back?"

Peter chuckled lightly.

"I let you go earlier, but now I regret it."

At these words, the stone that had just settled in the Penguin's heart rose again!

Sweat once again beaded on his forehead.

He knew that if the other man wanted to kill him, he had no way to resist.

Even if he survived today, what about tomorrow?

"Haha, don't be nervous. I'm just joking."

"Whew!"

The Penguin's mouth twitched.

This joke wasn't funny at all.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and forced a smile.

He let out a couple of dry laughs in response.

"You're quite the humorous one, sir."

Peter's tone turned serious as he patted the Penguin on the shoulder.

"Oswald, I know about you. The misfortunes of your childhood aren't your fault. You had no choice but to walk this path."

"But now it's different. By working for me, you can have everything you want."

"When necessary, if you encounter a problem you can't solve, you can come to me for help."

"However, unless absolutely necessary, it's best not to do so. My time is precious."

Peter, well-versed in the art of painting a rosy picture, spoke these words with ease.

Whether or not these promises could be fulfilled in the future didn't matter. What mattered was painting that picture today.

This was also a necessary tactic to increase Oswald's loyalty to him.

Intimidation alone wasn't enough. He had to offer some sweeteners to make people willingly work for him.

Don't ask how he knew all this. Let's just say he had encountered such bosses in his past life.

People inevitably become what they once despised.

Hearing Peter's words, the Penguin was deeply moved.

A person with so much bitterness in their heart—how much care and love does it take to fill that void?

The answer: just a little.

For a moment, the Penguin couldn't control his emotions and felt the urge to cry.

He also began to feel that the man before him wasn't so terrifying after all.

On the contrary, he seemed like a decent person.

Even though he had offended him earlier, not only had Peter not killed him, but he had also taken him under his wing!

He had already left but came back specifically to say these words to him.

He truly was a good person.

If it were him, with such immense power, he probably wouldn't be so forgiving toward others.

The Penguin took a deep breath and said to Peter solemnly:

"Sir, I, Oswald Cobblepot, am now your man. I'll follow your every command!"

This knightly vow showed his sincerity.

Peter suddenly began to doubt himself.

Wait…

Are you acting, or do I actually have a talent for bluff people?

Does Oswald have Stockholm Syndrome or something???

This is ridiculous…

Peter smiled faintly and continued:

"Work hard. With my protection, no one will bully you in the future."

"Unfortunately, I'm currently dealing with some injuries. Once I recover…"

He didn't finish the sentence, leaving the Penguin to imagine the possibilities.

The Penguin swallowed hard, his eyes gleaming.

"Could it be that you're even stronger than Superman…"

Peter said lightly:

"Superman? He's nothing special. Oswald, broaden your horizons. With such limited insight, it'll be hard to entrust you with important tasks in the future."

The Penguin felt his head spin. In his worldview, Superman was undoubtedly the strongest being.

Could it be that this man before him was even stronger than Superman?

Yes!

That was entirely possible!

Bullets couldn't harm Superman, but they couldn't even reach this man!

So, he might indeed be stronger than Superman!!!

What kind of luck did I have today?

To have met such a powerful figure!

The Penguin suddenly felt that his future was bright!
