Chapter 89 - Reconcile(2)
At that time, she realized with painful clarity—it was truly over between her and Meng Yao’er.
Until later, when she saw her on a variety show, teasing a female guest.
Su Qingyao couldn’t help but rush over, telling herself it wasn’t because she still cared—it was because she didn’t want Meng Yao’er to go astray. This wasn’t who she was supposed to be. She needed to find her, to say everything that had been left unsaid.
“And… I know I’m selfish. I pushed you away, yet I still want you,” Su Qingyao took a deep breath, as if gathering the courage to spill the words she’d hidden deep within. “Our relationship has always been unstable. After every argument, I’d be reminded of my selfishness. Logic told me I shouldn’t drag you down with me anymore. But through all our days together, I fell in love with you.”
“I don’t even know what we are… caught in this push and pull, never truly letting go…”
It was always Su Qingyao retreating, always Meng Yao’er reaching out.
But her own insecurities had crushed her, making her feel unworthy even in the face of Meng Yao’er’s passionate love.
Two years ago, she couldn’t even walk the runway anymore—she had to announce her retirement.
She was thirty-two now, not as young as Mengmeng.
In a few more years, when her beauty faded with age, she’d drift even further from Mengmeng.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” Su Qingyao sat up straight, her whole body tense, as if surrendering, as if conceding defeat. “You still love me now, so… let’s be together. And when the day comes that you grow tired of me, when you don’t want me anymore, we can part ways. I won’t… I won’t blame you.”
Meng Yao’er was silent for a long time—so long that Su Qingyao’s heart raced like a drum, doubting if she’d been foolishly self-indulgent—until finally, she spoke slowly, softly, repeating the question she’d asked before:
“Qingqing, you still love me, don’t you?”
“I love you.”
“Then let’s date, In the truest sense—based on mutual affection, a healthy, normal relationship.” She looked into Su Qingyao’s eyes, her voice tender yet firm. “Is that okay, Qingqing?”
“Qingqing, things have always been awkward between us. I know what’s weighing on your heart, but I never knew how to fix it. You don’t believe I’ll love you forever, so you choose to run away,” Meng Yao’er chuckled softly. “But you never run far, do you? You always stand just close enough… watching me with those longing eyes.”
“Love needs nurturing, balanced effort from both sides. And you and I—we’ve already got that foundation,” she said, shifting to sit closer, turning on the car’s interior light so their faces were clearly visible in the glow.
Meng Yao’er glanced at Su Qingyao, noticing the faint wet patches on her chest and the faint bite marks on her clothes—her handiwork from earlier. Then she looked away.
“I was wrong too. I shouldn’t have kept pushing you, using the wrong approach, making your insecurities worse.”
“So today, I want to ask you seriously—will you build a relationship with me?”
Su Qingyao stared, dazed. “Are you serious?”
She remembered her only intention in coming today was to make sure Meng Yao’er was safe from afar. She hadn’t expected anything more.
Su Qingyao sought confirmation again. “Mengmeng, you won’t regret this?”
Meng Yao’er tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, narrowing her beautiful eyes playfully. “You always tell me to find someone who’ll love and cherish me. Can you do that?”
“I can.”
Su Qingyao nodded again, her gaze lowering, her voice steady but void of emotion. “I can. I won’t push you away anymore. And… what I said earlier still stands—if you ever don’t want me, you can leave anytime.”
Seeing her like this, Meng Yao’er felt her heart soften completely. She knew now—she could never threaten to break up in a fit of anger again. Qingqing would take it seriously. Qingqing was too insecure, too fragile to know how to hold on when someone tried to leave.
After fidgeting with her fingers for a moment, Su Qingyao reached out, pulling Meng Yao’er onto her lap, finally asking the question that had been bothering her all day:
“Today… what did Tang Yuan want from you?”
Meng Yao’er raised an eyebrow sharply, her voice sweet and teasing. “Hmm? Is Qingqing jealous?”
Su Qingyao’s hands tightened slightly around her, a touch of awkwardness in her movements. “No… just curious.”
“There’s no need to be jealous of her. Her relationship with Jiang Zi is way more stable than ours.”
That sentence seemed to trigger something—a sudden, heavy silence settled between them.
After a while, Meng Yao’er spoke again. “She came to ask me about Lu Shan’en. I passed her some information.”
“Oh.” Su Qingyao pulled her closer, her voice soft as she circled back to their earlier topic. “Our relationship will get more stable too.”
Meng Yao’er snuggled into her embrace, her hand playfully sliding down, pausing just above the thin fabric separating them.
“Qingqing… we’ve never tried it in the car. Want to?”
The car, parked in an old district, didn’t drive away until late into the night.
…
After experiencing a time when she couldn’t reach Tang Yuan, Jiang Zi decided to avoid such a situation again. So, even though she had work the next day, she surprisingly didn’t leave the house.
They’d stayed up late the previous night, and Tang Yuan was exhausted. As a result, she woke up quite late—when she opened her eyes, it was already ten o’clock.
After washing up, she headed straight for the breakfast Jiang Zi had prepared, as if it were second nature. But out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the study door was left ajar, with a familiar figure sitting inside.
She walked over and stood at the doorway.
“Sister? You haven’t left yet? Isn’t it busy at the company?”
Jiang Zi lifted her gaze from the computer screen, her voice gentle.
“I’m working from home this morning. I’ll head over in the afternoon.”
Tang Yuan nodded in understanding and was about to turn away, not wanting to disturb her.
But Jiang Zi’s voice followed from behind.
“Will you come to the company with me this afternoon?”
“Huh?” Tang Yuan turned back, puzzled. “Do you need me for something?”
“I need you.”
“Ah??” Tang Yuan hesitated for a moment. “I can’t. I’m supposed to meet my brother today.”
“He’ll be at the Wish Headquarters later. You can come with me to find him.”
“Oh, really? Okay then.” Tang Yuan didn’t think much of it and agreed.
Watching her walk away, Jiang Zi thought that after breakfast, Tang Yuan would probably do her makeup and pick out an outfit. Once she was ready, they could leave together—and then… she wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to reach her.
Jiang Zi’s gaze darkened slightly as she shifted her attention back to the document on her laptop, but her mind struggled to focus.
When Tang Yuan was finally ready, Jiang Zi shut her computer.
Seeing Tang Yuan carrying the file bag they’d brought back last night, she greeted her cheerfully.
“Sister, shall we go?”
Jiang Zi thought to herself, ‘If it weren’t necessary, I really wouldn’t want to leave the house. Staying home is the safest.’
They’d been too caught up enjoying their time together last night to even glance at the stack of documents. So, it wasn’t until Jiang Zi was driving that Tang Yuan opened the bag for the first time.
There was a lot inside. After flipping through it briefly, she found a USB drive. She gave it a quick look before stuffing it back in.
‘Forget it. I’ll go through it later with Tang Gu.’
‘It’s too much of a headache to read right now.’
【Today’s the first time Sister invited me to the Wish Headquarters. I’m kind of excited. She probably wants to show off her—hmm— her dowry no… her wealth. Hehe.】
