Chapter 5: Chapter 5. The sound of falling snow
Suddenly a smoke of golden dust surrounded Hatsuki, and she was inside a wall of glass in the blink of an eye. "Eh?! Where am I?!" She spoke in a louder voice. Losing her balance as the entire structure surrounded shook.
"We are on our way to the capital," said the Master while he tightly gripped her shoulder, stabilizing Hatsuki. His hands were as cold as snow and even though her eyes briefly gazed at his mask due to curiosity, there was not a hint of expression.
Feeling the blood rush towards the back of her neck, Hatsuki was quick to move her eyes to the wall of glass from where the entire city could be seen. Unlike the view of the cities in the human world, there were no skyscrapers and tall buildings. The houses emitted the golden lights from the lanterns, brimming with blurry dim scenes.
"The town looks so small" She murmured, enjoying the view while also aware of the hand pressed on her shoulder. The Master looked at the young lady beside him and asked, "What type of Jade do you want?"
"Jade? Why would I need it?" Hatsuki questioned back; while still enjoying the view of the town yet a surge of bashfulness overtook her feelings.
"For any ability to take its physical form requires a medium unless you are a supernatural being. Many humans use talismans, and amulet to perform their abilities but in under realm, jade is highly sought after for being a medium that increases the ability."
Since the structure stabilized, Yukinori lifted his hand off Hatsuki's shoulder and reached for his hair. He took off the silver hair barette on his head, letting the hair flow which reached till his tailbone. Tying the hair into a ponytail, he added back the barette which had a dragon embedded in it.
Hatsuki was in awe at the sight of his luscious lock of hair which was well taken care of. Her eyes once again wandered around his appearance. Although his face wasn't visible, his hair alone was sufficient.
"So which jade do you want to have" Yuki asked once again while the dim orange light above them started to fade. His eyes red-handedly caught Hatsuki's preying eyes, sending her to the realm of embarrassment where she wished to dig a hole and bury herself instead she would be flying off the sky.
"Uh…can I have the one that pleases my eye? I do not have much knowledge regarding the jade after all" Hatsuki replied, feeling the blood rushing towards the apples of her cheeks as well as her nape.
Her words made Yuki give a side look towards her, lightly snickering underneath the mask.
"That's fine as well" he had a tone of glee, but this time Hatsuki made sure to not look towards him at all.
Silence enveloped and they both stared at the glass wall from where the sight of the capital city was visible. There were taller buildings which had pagoda roofs and plentiful lanterns hung around. The lights were brighter as though it was time for the festival.
As they continued to enjoy the view, all of a sudden, they started to head downhill. The floor beneath them tilted and as a reaction, Hatsuki could feel herself in the air, almost about to crashland to the corner of the wall when immediately the master grabbed her by the waist and stayed still in the air.
Hatsuki's body tightly grabbed onto the master while her eyes were barely open anticipating the fall. "What is happening" She panicked.
"We are about to land, and Kang Nai Xin hates that, so he is making us miserable as well" he replied calmly while still holding Hatsuki closely.
"Kang Nai Xin? What's that?! AHH! Why is it even faster now" Hatsuki squished her eyes close while the cold wind blew directly on her face but after a while, it came to an end. Suddenly everything around her was still and yet, she still hadn't let go of the master.
Her feet touched the ground, and it was still. 'Is it safe now?' She opened her eyes only to find herself in the master's embrace. Even his cold presence was warmer but all of a sudden, she jumped out of his arms and took a few steps back.
"I… I am sor-" Just as she was about to apologize a little chick-like bird with a white cloth wrapped on its back flew towards them and on its feet was a little lantern. It was an old lantern with no light inside in it and plenty of colourless tassels underneath it.
"Be gentler next time Nai Xin" The master patted the bird's head, and the little bird squiggled under his touch and suddenly disappeared, but it was Hatsuki whose eyes were as big as marbles while her lips slightly pouted and nose scrunched.
'So, we were riding on that little lantern carried by that bird the whole time?!' She felt enlightened yet surprised while still finding the experience thrilling. The concoction of those feelings twisted her tummy after all, she had held to master so tightly for her life!
"Let's go to the market" said the master and so, Hatsuki walked beside him fencing her feelings.
The capital was lively from afar. The roads were filled with beings who had mostly taken human form, but Yukinori was careful making sure to take Hatsuki only in the narrow lanes where there weren't many spirits.
On the way was a small store with a few displays of masks and hair barrettes. Yuki led himself in while Hatsuki followed.
She didn't question and let her eyes explore. As he pushed the mahogany door, a 'Ting' could be heard and out of thin air, a little snake crawled from the ground and turned into a human.
"Good evening, Albiter how may we come of service to you?" Said the man with snake scales on his fingers. His eyes were bright lemon yellow and Hatsuki hadn't gone unnoticed under his vision.
"Bring me the newest set of masks and the best jades you have"
"Is it for the young lady?" The snake man asked while Hatsuki instinctively took a few steps behind the master.
"Yes," the master replied, and the snake man gave a generous business smile "That's great then. We have a few new sets of jade which just arrived from the south. Also, please have a seat" The man brought two chairs although neither of them sat down.
Hatsuki's curious eyes couldn't resist the hairpins and barrettes which were made of crystals, silk and jade. Among them, took a hold of the little barette which had an orange carnation flower made on a silver.
"Do you like that one?" the master asked, lightly turning towards her. Quickly Hatsuki placed the barette down and shook her head. She felt debted towards him and anymore, would make her feel even more guilty.
Meanwhile, the snake spirit turned back to his snake form and went to the back of the store.
"Mei Hua! Bring the new second set of natural jades!" He ordered while taking out the first set and presented it inside the room. His presence fumbled the two customers who were in their world.
"Are these the ones?" Yukinori the arbiter immediately asked, and the snake owner gave a nod while placing them on the counter. Hatsuki too walked towards the encounter to take a look.
Soon a girl walked inside the room holding another set of jades and presented it at the counter as well.
The set consisted of different ornaments. A few were pendants while some were necklaces, earrings and bracelets. The second set had rings, a hair comb, a tassel and hairpins.
"These are the natural set of jade. Mined from the south of the under realm where the Heavenly realm's portal is located, these are extremely pure and highly effective" said the Owner while Hatsuki glanced over every jade.
They were all extremely precious and luxurious but even so, one of them continued to hoard her eyes. It was a lovely pink tassel which had a navy-blue jade carved into the shape of a dragon.
"How about that one?" Hatsuki pointed towards the tassel and the woman picked it up and gave it to Hatsuki to hold.
"You have a really good choice miss. It's the rarest of all the jades and has been specially crafted by craftsman Moon tale. It's called 'Sound of the falling snow' and is a highly sought spirit guide," said the woman.
"Then, can I get this one?"
"Eh," Yuki replied.
