Chapter 40: The bait
The forest was densely packed with trees, shrubs and bushes, a grassland plain tilted all the way to a hill and pushed downwards into a valley.
Earlier, he had seen a cultivator enter this forest and then another, and another and another. This simply means, it might not be only him battling for the eggs. In fact, it is also possible that the chasm and the gorge is also not meant for only him.
But, they needed to gather nine eggs, three from the forest, three from the chasm and three from the gorge. In other words, there can only be three eggs in the forest and a thousand cultivators had already entered, frantically searching for that egg. In fact, Mu Shen's eyes widened when he saw a cultivator with one egg.
His eyes flashed.
He also considered some things.
'Which is better? Searching aimlessly, or plundering from cultivators?'
The forest did not restrict Mu Shen's power like Stormsea had done so, he charged forward with an iron fist causing everything to bend backwards, the trees were no exception.
"Mu Shen please spare me, please."
The young cultivator cried. Mu Shen wasn't surprised that this stranger knew his name. Their names were boldly inscribed on their chests just like the glowing number that hovered above their heads.
Mu Shen tilted his head and smiled.
"Shi Feng, give me one reason why I should not hurt you. You have an egg with you and it is only wise to snatch it."
Shi Feng shivered, but still managed to answer.
"The forest doesn't just contain three eggs. There are a bunch of them. However, a mammalian serpent protects them. I struggled to snatch this one with my life."
Mu Shen's brows furrowed and his expression sank.
"As expected."
The forest cannot be danger free. Even powerful cultivators had to face certain life and death crisis at some point. He immediately turned towards Shi Feng and spat.
"Come with me..."
Shi Feng shuddered. "Do I have to come? You're powerful enough to grab an egg or two. Besides, the serpent is quite docile."
That was a lie and Mu Shen saw through that lie.
Mu Shen stared at him and a cruel smile appeared on his face.
"Why of course, you have to be the bait."
Shi Feng's face paled. "Why do I have to be the bait? What if I die?"
Mu Shen's gaze turned frosty. "Listen to me, I'm not in the mood for all of this, and of course I am not also planning for you to die along the way, it's a chance for us both to benefit, fifty fifty. Did you get it? Be the bait, I get us those eggs and we move to the next location."
Mu Shen already had a plan brewing and another back-up plan, just in case it goes haywire. Shi Feng was startled.
He hadn't expected that they would be gains after becoming the bait, he simply just hoped that he wouldn't die as a bait. Not just that, in case things go down south, he already has a way to save himself. He decided to trust Mu Shen at this moment.
"Ok I'll be the bait."
Mu Shen immediately sneered. "You have no choice anyways. If you had refused, I would have resulted to snatching your egg and still making the trip to the serpent's den. There are no two ways to it, but I'll find out how I can get those eggs eventually."
Mu Shen was right, whatever he did, he did with calculated efficiency. He would have made plans to go find the serpent alone, however team effort is more likely to succeed while a one-man squad might fail. Not necessarily fail, but it would definitely take a while for his plan to weave into fruition.
An hour later, they arrived at the supposed den.
Mu Shen had expected to enter a cave or something, probably scavenge the depth of a tunnel, however he saw an island of bones scattered all over the plain and a dune of white stretched so deep that it was terrifying.
Mu Shen stared at Shi Feng and asked; "does the serpent collect bones?"
Shi Feng's face was pale. "I might have slightly omitted a bit of information about the serpent?"
Mu Shen's face suddenly turned grave. "What is that?"
"The serpent has a liking to souls that it senses pure human soul even from miles away."
Mu Shen tensed.
"Soul destroyer?"
Shi Feng shuddered and nodded. And just as they were talking, the bones and white dunes rippled underneath, and instantly — bones popped, rattled and flew into the air revealing a homologous serpent with a loathsome expression on its bestial face.
