Chapter 96 : Look who's back
It was just an ordinary morning in campus, students were coming and going all over the place. Some were rushing as they were late for some meeting, while others strolled around the place conversing, drinking coffee or simply enjoying the nice weather.
Something like that was only possible because students were currently on vacation and the campus was actually one of the most beautiful places regular citizens had access to. Not only it was as big as one of the old cities, there were also many green areas brimming with trees, well trimmed bushes and pretty flowers.
Despite the beautiful morning, the sunny day and the soothing smell of the many flowers adorning the place, a cup of coffee fell from a beautiful tall girl's shaky hands and she gaped at the sight of a familiar face exiting the library.
"Take care young bookworm!" Mister Scofield waved at Uriel who had just visited the library to let him know he was alright.
"Thanks, you too Mister Scofield!" Uriel replied squinting his eyes with sincerity.
"URIEL!?" Medusa shouted drawing the attention of those around her but she didn't care. Her first instinct was to run towards him and ask the reason why he hadn't replied to any of her messages or calls but she felt as though her legs were stuck in concrete. She didn't have any means to know it, but Uriel was trying to lay low and she almost ruined all of his efforts with her loud tone of voice.
"Oh! hey! I was looking for you." Uriel scratched the back of his head.
"When did you come back?" She managed to ask.
"It's just been a couple days..."
"Where have you been? Why didn't you answer my calls? Are you free today?"
"Calm down, would you? I mean to tell you guys everything, but this is not the place. Don't tell anyone I'm back and refrain from using your cellphone, please. I'll explain everything later." Uriel explained as he handed Medusa a piece of paper with an address and time. Before Medusa could even reply Uriel had already vanished in the crowd.
For a full minute she couldn't get herself to move from the spot. She had been rounding the library for a long time in hopes of meeting Uriel when he came back and when he finally did, he barely even spoke to her. Being the rational and sensible woman she was, she arrived at what she thought was the only plausible conclusion:
"Uriel has a girlfriend..." She muttered.
The short exchange with Medusa left Uriel somewhat troubled, as he noticed she had been really worried about him and wanted all sorts of answers he couldn't provide. The problem was that even if he wanted to explain everything, he didn't know where to start. He also didn't know how much he should share with his friends because, as much as he trusted them before, those feelings were in the past.
In fact, he was unsure whether he had any emotions at all. All the things he experienced before, like trust, longing, wishful thinking, even love, felt like distant things he couldn't grasp anymore. Even his resentment towards Nika had somewhat subsided, he couldn't even get himself to be angry at anything or anyone.
The one feeling that wouldn't abandon him was annoyance. Everyone around him seemed to be so shallow and their happiness irked him.
Uriel headed towards his dorm room expecting to find Sam, but he was nowhere to be seen so he settled for leaving the same instructions he gave Medusa on a note.
'This was the easiest on the list, but next one...' Uriel thought to himself, fearing the next person on his list won't be easy to find. All he knew about Luna was that she lived on campus, but there were several female dorms. Then an idea crossed his mind. 'If Luna was able to perform a surgery on Medusa, that must mean she's studying to become a doctor.'
Arriving at that conclusion Uriel headed out to the medicine faculty which was located at the opposite side of campus. Walking that distance would be really time consuming, but he had no other choice.
Most students moved on campus using either bicycles, scooters or even skateboards, but Uriel never had the means or the need for something like that since his dorm room was close to the social studies faculty.
The thought of summoning the jaguar spirit crossed his mind, but the risk of being spotted was too high and after telling Walter his trait was regeneration, he could no longer say his trait was summoning.
Even someone was clueless on the ways of hunters as Uriel knew people couldn't possess more than one trait. Some traits would eventually develop different manifestations, like Nika who could enter Uriel's shadow, but she could also move in between shadows at short distance making it seem like teleportation.
Instead of moping about what he couldn't do, Uriel decided to make the best of what he could do. Thanks to all the points he allocated into speed he started running at a decent speed, though he was fast it was nothing that would catch someone's eye as people were already accustomed to watching ascended students run from place to place.
It took him less than an hour to reach the medicine faculty, but what surprised him wasn't his speed but the fact that he wasn't even breathing heavy.
[System notice] Physical training level 1 completed.
Reward: 1 Trite received.
"A trite!? As in the very first coin minted!?" By saying it out loud Uriel mindlessly activated his trait and the coin appeared on his hand. The coin was made of electrum which was an alloy made of gold and silver, it had rough edges as if it was made with very primitive means, but it wasn't aged at all. It was shiny and looked expensive, something that pleased Uriel's greediness.
"This is awesome but... no one would believe in it's authenticity as it doesn't look old enough. I wonder what use could I give it."
As if replying to his implied question, the system app provided a detailed explanation.

Uriel wasn't tired after his running, and yet, he found himself completely out of breath after the incredible find. Although he always assumed his trait would allow him to become stronger by buying artifacts, he didn't expect something like that.
Now he could become stronger by getting money and get money by getting stronger. It was an endless self improving cycle.
Still, what surprised him the most was the name of the locked exhibition room.
