Chapter 245: Chapter 244: Aftermath
At around three o'clock in the afternoon the next day, the sky was overcast with thick, dark clouds, and a light drizzle fell steadily, blanketing everything in a misty haze.
"It's raining again… This June has really been eventful," Kaminari muttered, sitting in the backseat of his father's new car. He stared quietly at the scenery passing by outside the window, while his father focused on driving.
That's right—he'd been released from the Saitama Police Headquarters. With no evidence tying him to any of the killings and with Snatch taking the blame for everything, Kaminari was cleared of all charges.
However, this had come at a cost. Snatch was now under intense investigation and was likely to have his Hero license revoked in the coming days. How long it would remain revoked was uncertain.
Even though Snatch was a Pro Hero and his actions were in self-defense after being attacked, the ridiculous laws of society still demanded a heavy price. Even if he'd killed a group of known villains, the law wouldn't let him off easily.
Sometimes, Kaminari couldn't help but wonder, who were these laws even protecting? If a group of civilians had died, he could understand the outrage. But what was so wrong about a Pro Hero killing a few wanted criminals and thugs?
To be honest, after this incident, Kaminari felt increasingly disillusioned with the current legal system. But his ties to people he cared about kept him tethered to it.
"Son."
His father's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
"Huh? What is it, Dad?"
"Aizawa-sensei asked me to tell you that you're allowed to take the day off today. But he wants you back in class tomorrow, as usual."
Kaminari nodded, not particularly surprised.
"At the same time," his father continued, "he sent over the student information for Class 2 of the Hero Course. He said you should study it carefully, since… well, you're going to be teaching at U.A. High School from now on."
Kaminari's father glanced at his son through the rearview mirror, a conflicted expression on his face. He had prepared himself for the idea of Kaminari becoming a teacher, but actually seeing it happen, his fifteen-year-old son becoming a teacher at U.A.—still felt surreal.
"I'm a teacher at U.A., but I'm still a student there as well. Not only do I have to attend classes, but I also have to teach others. Honestly, it's kind of hilarious."
Kaminari laughed at his own predicament. He couldn't help but imagine the reactions of his classmates in Class 1-A when they found out. Especially Bakugo, his reaction would probably be priceless.
"And… Kyoka said she's coming over after school," his father added, his voice taking on a slightly teasing tone. "She wanted to pick you up with your mother, but I stopped her. I figured you'd need some time to calm down and unwind."
Hearing Kyoka's name, his father's expression grew even more gossipy. Her concern for Kaminari during the phone call the other day had been… notable, to say the least.
"Tell me, son—what's going on between you and Kyoka?"
"Oh, we're dating," Kaminari replied casually, still gazing out the window. Then, as if anticipating his father's reaction, he added, "And if you're planning to object, let me make it clear, your objection won't change anything."
"Wait, really?!"
His father was taken aback by how easily Kaminari admitted it. For a moment, he didn't even know what to say. Still, a small part of him felt disappointed.
He had always hoped Kaminari might end up with Momo. While Kyoka seemed like a nice girl, he couldn't help but feel Momo was a better match.
"When did this happen? And what about Momo?" his father pressed, still reluctant to let the topic go.
"We made it official recently," Kaminari replied with a shrug. "And what does this have to do with Momo?"
"Well… I just thought you and Momo seemed pretty close…" his father said hesitantly.
"We're close, sure, but not in the way you're thinking. Besides, why would someone like her be interested in me?" Kaminari said with a chuckle, though his tone was self-deprecating.
"What's wrong with you?!" his father said, visibly annoyed. "My son is incredible, how many kids your age can compare to you, Kaminari?!"
In his father's eyes and his mother's, too Kaminari was second to none among his peers.
"Sure, her family is wealthier than ours," his father admitted, "but you know how much potential our company has. Sooner or later, the Kaminari family will be a household name in Japan!"
"Okay, okay, you win," Kaminari said with a helpless smile. "But I've already decided to be with Kyoka, so stop worrying about it and start thinking about how to treat your future daughter-in-law!"
Hoping to steer the conversation away, Kaminari quickly changed the subject.
"By the way, will what happened this time affect the 'Seifu Campaign'?" he asked. He was concerned that news of his involvement in the incident might harm his public image.
"Not at all," his father reassured him. "Thanks to the influence of the Mitsui Foundation, none of the reports about the incident mentioned your name."
Kaminari's father smiled, marveling at Mitsui's power. "The Mitsui Consortium is incredible, so powerful it's almost hard to believe."
"Well, that's a relief," Kaminari said with a nod.
It was worth noting that, with Snatch unable to continue as a bodyguard due to the investigation, the Midnight Agency had taken over the job. Of course, this was a paid arrangement, as their original agreement only covered community protection.
Behind their car, two black vehicles followed closely, each carrying two Pro Heroes as bodyguards. Though Kaminari's father now had four bodyguards, none of them were second-rate Heroes. They were all solidly third-rate.
Soon, Kaminari and his father arrived home safely. As expected, his mother greeted him with tears and hugs, holding him tightly while sobbing. Kaminari had no choice but to comfort her until she calmed down. She had been genuinely terrified by the incident.
After a while, she finally collected herself and hurried off to the kitchen to prepare a feast. Tonight's dinner wasn't just for Kaminari but also for Kyoka, who was coming over.
Although she had met Kyoka once before, the context was different now. Before, Kyoka was simply one of Kaminari's friends. Now, she was his girlfriend.
The openness was evident, neither of his parents viewed their relationship as "puppy love." Instead, they were fully supportive.
Meanwhile, Kaminari retreated to his room with a sigh of relief. Once inside, he instructed the invisible Pikachu to help him connect to the phones of Principal Nezu and Mitsui Buntais. As for Momo, she was likely still in class.
"It seems you've arrived home safely. Congratulations," Principal Nezu's voice came through the line.
"Good to hear," Mitsui Buntais added. "When I heard a powerful villain attacked the police station yesterday, I was genuinely shocked!"
Kaminari chuckled awkwardly, feeling a mix of gratitude and exasperation at Mitsui's words. The villain in question was no ordinary criminal. In fact, Kaminari doubted anyone in Japan besides All Might and maybe Endeavor could take him down.
"I really can't thank you enough for your help," Kaminari said sincerely. "Without you, I'd probably be a wanted fugitive by now."
To Nezu, he said, "Principal, I'll do my best as a teacher at U.A., helping the Hero Course students develop their Quirks."
Turning to Mitsui, he added with a smile, "Old man, if you or the Mitsui Consortium ever need my help, just call me. I'll be there, as long as it doesn't hurt my family, friends, or loved ones!"
"Oh? And what am I to you?" Mitsui asked with a laugh.
"A friend," Kaminari replied seriously. "Anyone who tries to harm you will regret it. I promise you that, as long as I'm alive, this promise will hold true."
Mitsui laughed heartily.
