Chapter 138: Chapter 138: The Fourth Hokage
Though it lasted but a moment, TenTen had unmistakably seen the person who saved Princess Sara—a figure with blond hair strikingly reminiscent of Naruto's. The image lingered in her mind, evoking memories of her friend. But this was impossible. They had traveled two decades into the past. Naruto hadn't even been born, and only she and Kirito had made this temporal leap.
Perceiving TenTen's puzzlement, Kirito gave a knowing smile and suggested, "Let's follow the figure. We'll understand more that way."
Despite her curiosity, TenTen's focus was momentarily drawn to the cheering crowd. Their joyous shouts seemed oddly out of place for what had just occurred.
"Your princess was just taken away—why are you all cheering?" TenTen asked, incredulous.
When her words didn't elicit a response, she lightly tapped the shoulder of a nearby reveler. To her shock, the individual collapsed to the ground.
Kneeling to investigate, TenTen quickly realized, "This isn't a person..."
The figure was a crude wooden puppet, its hollow eyes lifeless yet still moving as though clapping and cheering. A closer look revealed similar traits among the rest of the crowd.
"They're puppets," TenTen muttered. "Roughly crafted ones, too. Could the entire crowd be puppets? Where are the real people… and the princess? Is she a puppet as well?"
Before she could delve further, the clay puppet that had stood behind Princess Sara on the balcony leaped down, armed with a sharp blade and advancing rapidly toward them.
"Did it mistake us for the kidnappers?" TenTen speculated, drawing her Thunder Blades—Fang—and activating their electrified edges.
"I'll handle this," Kirito said calmly. From the distant desert, a surge of dark iron sand responded to his chakra, forming countless sharp spears.
"Magnet Release: Iron Sand Giant Needle!" he commanded.
The iron sand spears launched forward, piercing the attacking puppet mid-air and rendering it motionless. The remaining fragments twitched, attempting to reassemble themselves.
"Not so fast!" TenTen exclaimed, channeling chakra into her blades. "Lightning Style: Thunder Strike!"
Lightning coursed through the puppet's remains, shattering them completely and scattering debris across the cheering crowd below.
"Great teamwork!" TenTen said with a grin, high-fiving Kirito.
"No time to linger," Kirito reminded her. "That person might escape."
"Right!"
Now understanding the nature of their surroundings, TenTen and Kirito moved swiftly, traversing over the heads and shoulders of the wooden crowd without hesitation. As they pursued the mysterious figure, more clay puppets emerged, attempting to obstruct their path. However, Kirito's precise iron sand manipulation and TenTen's lightning-infused attacks quickly neutralized them.
Finally, the duo reached a grassy clearing where they spotted four figures: Princess Sara, flanked by three masked ninjas in battle attire. One of them, a blond man, stepped forward and removed his mask to reveal a Konoha headband.
"Who are you?" the man asked firmly. "I am a ninja from Konoha, assigned to a top-secret mission here."
TenTen's heart skipped. "It's not Naruto…" she realized, slightly disappointed. Though the resemblance was striking, the differences were now clear.
Seeing a fellow Konoha ninja, TenTen introduced herself. "I'm TenTen, and this is Kirito. We're tracking a rogue ninja named Mukade."
Kirito remained silent but activated his Byakugan to assess their surroundings. He had already identified the blond man as Namikaze Minato, the future Fourth Hokage, and his companions as Akimichi Choza and Aburame Shibi. Choosing to maintain the timeline's integrity, he withheld this information.
Minato looked puzzled. "Strange… The Third Hokage assigned only us to this mission. Why would another team be here?"
Stepping forward, Kirito offered an explanation. "We're from the future. Mukade's tampering with the Dragon Vein's chakra disrupted time itself, pulling us into this era."
Minato's eyes narrowed as he processed the information. After a moment, he replied, "I see… If what you're saying is true, then defeating Mukade might restore the timeline and return you to your era."
Minato continued, "Our mission involves a man known as Anrokuzan. He appeared here six years ago, claiming to possess knowledge beyond this time—similar to your story."
"Anrokuzan…" TenTen echoed. "Could he actually be Mukade?"
"It's likely," Minato said gravely.
"That's impossible!" Princess Sara interjected, her voice trembling. "Anrokuzan is a kind man. He helped my mother use the Dragon Vein to bring prosperity to Rouran."
TenTen's voice softened as she replied, "But in our time, Rouran is gone… reduced to ruins."
Sara's face went pale, and she sank to her knees. "No… Rouran… the city my mother entrusted to me… It can't be…"
Seeing Sara's distress, Minato stepped in. "We need to act carefully. Too much interference could disrupt the timeline irreparably."
Ignoring his warning, TenTen scrutinized Minato's features, her eyes widening as realization dawned. "You… You're the Fourth Hokage!"
