Chapter 37: The first game
Kay, along with Trainer number 33 and Trainer number 24, set off on their investigation mission.
Their goal was simple; find the other team before the other team found them. Since the masked man had said that their opponents were on the other side of the island, the three trainers moved in that direction, making their way through the dense jungle.
The journey was not easy. The uneven ground was covered with thick roots and rocks, and the sounds of wild Pokemon echoed in the distance.
After one hour of walking, the ground suddenly shook, and a huge Onix appeared in front of them.
Its eyes burned with fury, and its massive stone body glistened in the sunlight. It roared fiercely, slamming its tail against the ground.
Kay quickly pulled out his Pokedex and checked its stats.
Onix:
Stage: Superior Steel
Potential: Yellow
Kay took a deep breath, then stepped forward. "Leave it to me," he said confidently.
Eevee immediately leaped forward, ready to battle. Kay wasted no time. "Eevee, use Double Team! Then follow it up with Bite!"
Eevee's body shimmered, and suddenly, multiple copies of Eevee appeared, surrounding Onix from all sides.
But Onix didn't panic. With a loud roar, it swung its massive tail with an Iron Tail! Its whip-like tail sliced through the air, crashing into the ground and destroying many of the Eevee copies in one powerful attack.
But the original Eevee remained. Using its speed, Eevee climbed up Onix's massive body, jumping from one rocky section to another.
By the time Onix realized what was happening, Eevee had already reached its neck.
"Now, Eevee! Use Bite!" Kay commanded.
Eevee sank its teeth full of Dark-type energy into Onix's neck, hitting a weak spot which caused a critical hit. Onix let out a thunderous cry, shaking the trees around them.
Trainer number 33 turned to Kay. "That cry is too loud. If the other team hears it, they'll come straight here."
Kay understood immediately. "So, what do we do?"
Number 33 responded, "We'll continue our way and leave you to finish the battle alone. If we find the other team, we'll complete the mission and call you to retreat."
Kay nodded. "Understood." Without wasting any more time, number 33 and number 24 disappeared into the jungle, leaving Kay to deal with Onix alone.
Kay clenched his fists. "Alright, Eevee! Let's finish this battle quickly!" He gave his next command. "Use Dig! Keep using it until Onix is defeated!"
Kay then turned back to check that his teammates had already left and weren't watching him, then he released Growlithe to protect him if Onix decided to attack him when Eevee went under ground.
Eevee quickly burrowed into the ground, disappearing from sight. Onix looked around, confused. Suddenly, Eevee emerged from the ground, slamming into Onix from below.
The massive rock snake staggered, letting out another cry of pain. But Kay didn't let up. "Again, Eevee! Keep using Dig!"
Eevee repeated the attack two more times, hitting Onix from different angles. On the third strike, Onix collapsed to the ground, motionless.
Kay let out a sigh of relief. He quickly returned Growlithe to its Pokeball, then turned and ran to catch up with his teammates.
Kay continued moving through the jungle, trying to follow the general direction his teammates had gone.
However, with no clear landmarks and dense trees surrounding him, he wasn't sure if he was on the right path. He just kept walking, hoping he would eventually catch up with them.
After about half an hour, he stopped suddenly. Ahead of him, five Geodudes blocked the path.
They were gathered around a large rock, looking like they were in the middle of a meeting. As soon as they spotted Kay, they turned their attention to him.
Kay quickly checked their stats. Four of them were at the Inferior Steel stage, but one stood out. It was slightly bigger; it was at the Intermediate Steel stage.
Kay knew he had to fight them to move forward. He took his Pokeball and called Growlithe out.
Kay wanted to train Growlithe so he told it to fight with the leader while Eevee took on the other Geodudes.
"Growlithe, take on the leader! Eevee, handle the others!"
"Graaw..." Growlithe barked in response and jumped forward, facing the stronger Geodude. Meanwhile, Eevee stood ready to battle the remaining four.
Kay wasted no time. "Growlithe, use Double Team, and then attack to close the distance!"
Growlithe's body shimmered, and several copies of it appeared, surrounding Geodude.
Without hesitation, Growlithe charged forward. But Geodude was ready. It slammed its fists into the ground, using Rock Throw.
Sharp rocks shot out in all directions, crashing into Growlithe's copies. One by one, the illusions disappeared until only the real Growlithe remained.
However, the strategy had worked, and Growlithe had managed to get close enough for an attack.
Just as Kay was about to give another command, Geodude curled into a ball and began spinning rapidly preparing to use Rollout.
Kay's eyes widened. "Growlithe, stop attacking and dodge! Wait for it to miss, then counter with Double Kick!"
Growlithe attempted to dodge, but before it could react, Geodude rolled straight into it.
The attack landed hard, sending Growlithe skidding backward. The hit was devastating as Rock-type moves were super effective against Fire-types.
Kay clenched his fists. The difference in power between an Inferior Steel stage Pokemon and an Intermediate Steel was clear.
Geodude had the advantage in both strength and typing. This battle wasn't going to be easy.
"Growlithe, are you okay?" he asked, concerned about the hit from Rollout.
Growlithe leaped forward, barking confidently. It nodded its head, showing that it was still ready to fight.
Kay took a deep breath. 'I have to play this smart. Growlithe had already taken damage, so rushing in blindly isn't an option.' He needed a safer approach.
"Growlithe, keep your distance! Run around and use Ember from afar!"
Flames shot appeared from Growlithe's mouth, hitting Geodude, but the Rock-type barely flinched.
Still, Geodude wasn't very fast and struggled to keep up with Growlithe's quick movements.
Kay glanced at Eevee. It had already taken down two Geodudes and was battling the last two.
'I just need to hold out a little longer'.
Soon, Eevee finished its battle. The remaining Geodudes lay on the ground, unable to fight.
Kay immediately called out, "Eevee, I need your help! Use Helping Hand on Growlithe!"
Eevee's body glowed as it sent energy toward Growlithe. Growlithe's power increased instantly, and it was ready to launch stronger attacks.
"Alright, Growlithe! Use Ember, then get in close for Double Kick!"
Growlithe launched another Ember before dashing toward Geodude. But Geodude countered with Rock Throw, sending sharp stones flying through the air.
"Dodge and keep going!" Kay shouted.
Growlithe weaved through the incoming rocks and leaped at Geodude. Just as it was about to land its Double Kick, Geodude curled into a ball and spun toward it using Rollout.
But this time, Growlithe didn't stop. Instead, it kicked the rolling Geodude mid-spin, stopping it in its tracks.
With another powerful kick to Geodude's face, the Rock-type tumbled backward.
Kay's strategy had worked since Geodude hadn't rolled for long, and Rollout's power was weak.
Growlithe had overpowered it with its Fighting-type move, which was super effective against Rock-type Pokemons.
"Now! While it's down use Ember!"
Growlithe blasted flames at the stunned Geodude. The attack burned it slightly, making it struggle to get back up.
"Finish it! Double Kick again!"
Growlithe rushed forward and delivered a clean two-hit combo, one to Geodude's body and the other to its face.
The force of the second kick sent Geodude crashing to the ground. It groaned weakly before falling to the ground.
Kay's eyes locked onto Geodude, waiting for any movement. But it didn't get up. It was knocked out.
Kay let out a relieved sigh and patted Growlithe's head. "You did great."
"Graw...Graw..." Growlithe barked happily, wagging its tail.
With the battle over, Kay glanced around. I need to find my teammates. He had spent too much time fighting and had lost track of their exact location.
