Chapter 24: Covering the Sky and Blocking the Sun

"The Black Palace has fallen. Terrifying monsters are attacking humans..."

"At exactly 12 PM London time, the Queen was attacked by monsters. She fled alone by car, and we have since lost contact with her..."

"This is the European Community... static noise... monsters..."

A global red crisis!

The infection spread like ink dripping onto white paper, rapidly expanding at an unimaginable speed. It defied human understanding, making it impossible to contain.

Unlike Blackwatch, which could suppress infections to a single street while keeping the next street unaffected and peaceful, most countries lacked such military capability. Even those strong nations with advanced military power were caught off guard.

More importantly, this was an upgraded version of the super Blacklight virus engineered by Chang Wei. Just the Anubis, the Deteriorated Hunters, and the four-armed hunters alone were enough to overwhelm humanity's containment and eradication efforts.

And now, Chang Wei had developed an even more terrifying creation: the "Fengshen Pterosaurs," which had faster propagation speeds and a wider range of activity.

Flying hunters!

Chang Wei understood that humanity's greatest strength lay in controlling airspace. As long as you flew high enough, a single airborne gunship or A-10 Thunderbolt II could suppress all infected creatures.

These hunters didn't need extraordinary speed. They only had to act as "obstacles"—like how a slow-flying bird could destroy a fighter jet.

The Fengshen Pterosaurs had an operational radius of over 100 kilometers. They didn't need food or fuel; a hundred-kilometer flight only consumed one human.

Next came the elimination of humanity's satellite communications and guidance systems.

A "film" covered the stratosphere, blocking sunlight and various electromagnetic signals.

This was the Blacklight Virus Atmosphere created by Chang Wei. With a thickness of 100 meters, it already overshadowed the skies above the Americas and Europe and continued to spread. Humanity, observing its presence, was gripped with fear.

"I've taken control of most of the ground and the skies. The only means left to attack me are nuclear submarines and missile silos."

Chang Wei, in his attempt to cover the entire world, realized the Earth was much larger than he had imagined. Despite being a super Blacklight virus now, the increased complexity of his form had slowed his production speed. Covering the whole planet instantly or even in a short time would require him to become even stronger.

What surprised Chang Wei was that he still hadn't found the "pariah," Jason.

From General Randall's memories, Chang Wei located the target site, only to discover it had long turned into a nest for Blacklight Virus creatures. Devouring it revealed an extremely primitive version of the virus.

Chang Wei didn't believe that Jason's Blacklight Virus was so inferior. Technically speaking, Jason should carry the original virus from the Redlight Project, with a more perfect integration than even Elizabeth. How could it be such an outdated version?

So, Chang Wei thought: If you refuse to come out, I'll infect the entire world—sea, land, and air. Let's see where you can hide then.

Nuclear submarines posed a threat to Chang Wei. The problem was that the ocean was vast, and eliminating humanity's submarines was beyond his reach for now. Aquatic creatures infected with the Blacklight Virus were too scarce, making it impossible to locate the submarines. However, fleets like the Pacific Fleet had already been wiped out.

Chang Wei's insane tactics, combined with the evolved hunters, were so unprecedented that even Blackwatch and the United States military didn't realize it was the Blacklight Virus. They assumed it was an alien invasion. After all, could a virus really create something like that atmosphere?

Don't be ridiculous! If viruses were this powerful, humanity would've left Earth ages ago.

Still, they couldn't just sit back and wait to die. Aliens or not, they were determined to knock the enemy's teeth out!

The only issue was that the enemy was in the stratosphere. Using nuclear weapons there could have dire environmental consequences.

When the Tsar Bomba detonated on the ground, its shockwave circled the globe three and a half times. Now, they planned to use 100 one-megaton hydrogen bombs for a blanket strike on the stratosphere to destroy the black substance. Some countries, lacking hydrogen bombs, would even resort to using standard nuclear weapons.

Such a plan would undoubtedly result in severe pollution and radiation. While a nuclear winter might be unlikely, it could lead to even larger holes in the ozone layer.

However, considering the rapid spread of the substance—at a speed of one square meter per second, and increasing—there was little choice. Alarmingly, Chang Wei had modified the Blacklight Virus to adopt a quasi-photosynthesis mechanism.

Ordinary photosynthesis couldn't sustain such conversion speed and efficiency, but the Blacklight Virus's energy utilization was almost miraculous. As a result, the spread rate only grew faster.
