Chapter 8: chapter 8
I took the cab and asked him about the hotel through Google Translate. And by night, I was eating local cuisine at a small restaurant. I walked up to the cashier and asked him about the local real estate agent for my property purchase.
He was shocked for a moment but then told me the address of a small real estate company. The land here had little to no value, and most of it was owned by the government. Some parts were even unclaimed by humans. So buying it through legal means was best to avoid getting into trouble.
I walked inside the office of a local real estate company. It was just big enough to fit two or three shops together. Not even a full building, just a small segment of a small building. There were only a few people inside.
"Excuse me," I said, and everybody looked at me together.
I cleared my throat and walked forward.
My pre-recorded voice and translator were heard, and they looked at me in astonishment.
The head of the company knew my language, and he invited me inside the office to discuss it.
"So, Miss, you need land near the biggest glacier and with a connectivity path to the sea bank. Well, it is not that difficult to find such a location here, but people normally don't tend to buy land near the sea. What is this land for?"
He looked confused by my unusual request, and I didn't mind his confusion.
I have already thought about the story. " I know it is quite an unusual request, but you know the world of riches—rich people just need to throw their money."
I laughed at my own words, and his confused eyes looked at me, urging me to elaborate.
"Well, I am a secretary of a country's food-richest family, and their youngest son has given me this job to build a vacation home here."
"Vacation home?"
I knew my words sounded abrupt, but everybody knew how rich people lived and how spiteful they could be. And he had no means to verify if I was telling the truth or not. I would just throw under the bus those people he couldn't reach.
"Yeah, actually, he is quite rebellious, and I was appointed as his assistant by his parents. But he hates me, and I can't do anything but agree to this stupid project if I want to keep my job. I have a family to feed—my parents and other members are dependent on me. So, whatever unreasonable vacation home he wants me to build here, I want to comply with his wishes."
The man looked at me with sympathy and somewhat believed my story.
"All right, Miss. Since you want to buy land legally, making a house or anything on it is not my concern. What I can do is wish you the best of luck with the kind of young master you have to deal with."
"Thank you, sir, for your empathy. My job makes me do such weird things. Sometimes, I feel embarrassed to tell others. Thanks for understanding."
"It's all right, Miss. Since you want this particular location, there are seven spots under the government's name that I would like to show you. Is going today okay with you?" he asked.
"Of course, sir, I want to get this project done as soon as possible and go back to my house. I don't know what comes next for me after this, but at least it wouldn't be coming to such harsh conditions," I said.
"Yeah, living here is quite tough, but it is also a fun experience in its own way," he replied, clearly seeing my discomfort in such a harsh climate.
He took me to the first spot, and it was great. The biggest glacier in the country was just 10 km away from here. It wasn't quite close, but it wasn't too far either. However, the problem was that the land was a little below my expectations.
"Sir, I need a land that has more space than this. If my young master actually wants to come here and see the conditions of Antarctica, he wouldn't be able to tolerate it. So, I need to make a perfect vacation house for him, and this land isn't enough to build that."
"Alright, Miss. If you want a bigger land, then there is only one location. But there is a problem. That location is quite far from town, and people tend to avoid that side because the sea currents during the summer are always high in that area."
I listened to his words, and it was a blessing in disguise. I wanted a remote place where traveling for other people would be difficult, so we wouldn't have to face many fights.
"Please show me that land, and I don't think the remoteness is a problem because my master will only come here once or twice in his life. It's just to torment me. But if I make this project good, his father might give me a promotion, and I will finally be able to leave my young master."
I sounded a little desperate to make my words believable.
"Alright, Miss. If that is the case, let me take you there."
Once I reached the field, my heart had a sweet sensation of getting the first thing done. The field was nearly as big as a small stadium—it was enough to build a base, cold storage for food, and other necessities. Most importantly, one side had a huge glacier, while two sides were surrounded by the sea. The only way to access it was through the land connecting it to the island, leaving a natural defense on three sides. We would only need to defend the front.
Nobody would climb the glacier, and coming through the sea was much more difficult than walking on land toward the base.
"I will take this. Whatever area is under the government's name, I want it all," I said.
His eyes widened.
"Miss, this is quite a huge land."
"I know, and I just want to make sure this land is enough for the blueprint our architecture team has given me."
"Alright, Miss. Since you want it, I will proceed with the land minister of the country. By tomorrow noon, I will come up with the papers and tell you how much you have to pay. We need to measure the land and calculate the cost, including taxation. And since you are a foreigner buying land here, there might be an additional charge."
"It's all right. Just do it as fast as possible."
"No worries, Ma'am. Since you are confident in buying this, I will try to speed up the process as much as possible," he said and drove back to the company.
I booked a cab and went back to the little hotel I was staying in.
