Chapter 245: Test Flight

Stark had only been a consultant for two days, but he had already critiqued all the departments of S.H.I.E.L.D., claiming they were too bureaucratic.

While everyone knew about the bureaucracy, saying it out loud changed the nature of the issue.

Instantly, many agents didn't have a favorable opinion of him. Nick Fury pretended not to notice. He just wanted to use Stark's talents, implicitly allowing various rumors to spread. By erecting an imaginary enemy in front of the agents, he aimed to promote internal unity. It was a well-intentioned effort.

With Tony Stark on board, a month later, the Helicarrier conducted a secret test flight. Doing so in Washington wasn't suitable; there were too many prying eyes.

They went to a place that was meaningful to Daisy, the waters off Puerto Rico, where S.H.I.E.L.D.'s shipyard, codenamed "Dock," was located—a super base.

It was an internal test flight, with no outside invitations. However, Stark didn't consider himself an outsider. As their carrier left U.S. waters, he controlled his Iron Man armor to follow.

Anyway, considering he was a technology consultant valued by Nick Fury, they couldn't just shoot him down. They had to let him follow the ship.

At the "Dock" base, the Department of Information began preparations for the test flight, commonly known as "clearing the field." All civilian aircraft were redirected away from the Helicarrier's flight path, and no private planes were allowed within the East Coast range.

Daisy was coordinating the docking through the Department of Science with Hill's bridge command system.

"Measure reactor power supply."

"Connect to the propulsion control system, and start the turbo engines for the first stage test run."

"Measure first-stage air disturbance index, check hovering power..."

Daisy and Hill each had their demeanor, giving orders back and forth, their synchronization and tactic understanding making the integration work quickly.

Stark, in his metal armor, took off his mask and sat slanted, holding a burger, watching them command.

As he ate, he mumbled somewhat indistinctly to Nick Fury, "Do you have too many female agents here? I never knew you guys had such great benefits!"

The scene was filled with beautiful women, not just Daisy and Hill, but also Black Widow, Mockingbird, and Simmons, all above average in looks. For a moment, Stark felt like S.H.I.E.L.D. was a gathering place for beautiful women.

Nick Fury certainly wouldn't discuss women with him. His face was dark, looking at the nervous and busy agents.

"Reactor power supply at 35%."

"Hovering power at 8%."

All data met the design requirements. Daisy gestured to Hill, who nodded slightly. Only then did she give the final order: "Engage engines at full power!"

The huge turbine blades began to spin. Daisy and her team calculated accurately; even at high speed, the noise from the blades was barely audible.

Stark also gave a short nod.

The rotational speed gradually increased from first gear to third gear, while the output power of the ship's reactor reached 65%. After checking various parameters, Hill decisively ordered, "Initiate the second reactor."

With both reactors supplying power evenly, the Helicarrier began to lift off the surface, much to everyone's anticipation.

As a vast amount of seawater was expelled, the colossal steel behemoth rose slowly into the air, visible to the ground agents' eyes.

With her initial tasks completed, Daisy didn't have much else to do. She casually found a chair and sat at a distance, observing Hill commanding.

"I'm going out for a bit, care to join?" Stark asked Daisy in a lowered voice.

Daisy gave him a slap on the back of his head. What a joke! To stand on the carrier's deck in front of everyone, ignoring the various dangers? How was that any different from writing "I have superpowers" on her forehead?

Stark flew out, while the bridge was still busy. When the carrier ascended to an altitude of ten thousand meters, Hill activated the optical camouflage—a first-class device entirely designed by Stark—and the ground radar failed to detect their presence.

Following the predetermined route, the carrier circled the United States and eventually returned to Puerto Rico.

Amidst the cheers of celebration, Daisy's task was officially completed.

She didn't participate in the celebration. Instead, she walked alone on the deck, lost in thought.

Something was off, very off.

Even though she couldn't receive signals from the unknown space transmissions, Daisy sensed something was wrong.

Occasional increases in her powers could be explained, but daily growth was unreasonable. Moreover, the events surrounding the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak had strangeness written all over the place.

Furthermore, her dressing sense seemed to be trending towards brighter colors, with more and more red clothing and accessories. Many subordinates of both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra claimed her demeanor was growing stronger. Initially, Daisy thought it was due to her increased powers, but upon closer analysis, it wasn't solely because of her abilities. There was something else reinforcing her presence.

These occurrences might not mean much on their own, but one day, when the loli Lorna was combing her hair, the little girl excitedly exclaimed, "Daisy, you have a few strands of red hair!"

The little girl felt that her green hair matched her red hair very well.

"What!" this shocked Daisy. How could her natural hair turn red? It made no sense.

She took the strands of hair, had them analyzed in the lab, and found they matched her DNA perfectly. But why did they turn red? The AI said there wasn't enough information to analyze.

Considering the Ancient One's directive for her to go to Kunlun, perhaps she foresaw something? Daisy felt uneasy. Could she be connected to the Phoenix?

To explore this further, she arranged to have dinner with Storm. Storm, usually composed, acted like she hadn't eaten in days and ordered a table full of food upon learning Daisy wasn't short on funds.

Before Daisy could subtly inquire about Jean's situation, Storm spilled the beans without any push, recounting everything that had happened during the past few months.

In her words, Jean had changed a lot. The once intellectual beauty now seemed preoccupied with trivial matters all day long.

"Students can't drink coffee, I get it. But should teachers also be restricted? She wants us to set an example? What kind of reason is that? I've never heard of it!"

Storm ranted about her unique experiences during this time.

"Jean is still my friend, and I'd die for her, but I think she's lost her mind!" Storm carefully chose her words, seemingly trying to articulate her thoughts clearly.

"Setting high standards for students, I don't object, but do we really need to train them as warriors and fighters? They're still a bunch of kids, and it's not their turn to go to the battlefield yet. The world is still peaceful. I think she's been influenced too much by that radical, Cyclops!"
