Chapter 100 - Will the system disappear, too?
On the second day of Chu Yu’s custody, his close friend Lin XiuYu came to keep him company.
Lin XiuYu had heard about Chu Yu’s summons immediately, but he hadn’t thought much of it. To him, this was just a procedural formality, nothing more. The authorities were merely acting under public pressure—after all, for so many years, who would dare to touch Chu Yu?
With that in mind, Lin XiuYu had resolutely decided to send people to the hospital that very night to silence Meng Yao’er.
What he didn’t know was that the police had long since obtained evidence of Lu ShanEn’s involvement in selling counterfeit and addictive drugs—and that Chu Yu was his accomplice. As the one who had eliminated Lu ShanEn through legitimate self-defense, Meng Yao’er had become a key protected witness.
The assassins Lin XiuYu sent were immediately taken down.
Meanwhile, a full day passed without any word of Chu Yu’s release. When Lin XiuYu tried to bail him out, he walked right into a trap.
Their intelligence network had been completely compromised. Lin XiuYu had only known that a customs shipment had been seized, which led to Chu Yu’s detainment, but he was utterly unaware that their supply chains and bases had also been exposed.
That was why he had let his guard down—why he hadn’t chosen to flee outright.
But then again, someone like him wouldn’t have run, regardless. Men like them, born into power, would never allow themselves to flee like beaten dogs. If anything, they would rather go down in flames, taking everyone with them.
Fortunately, they never got that chance.
With both Chu Yu and Lin XiuYu imprisoned, their organization was left leaderless. The police closed in, seizing nearly all of their stockpiled goods. Over 1,500 key individuals were arrested or placed on the most-wanted list. As for the remaining half, it was only a matter of time.
…
The spacious balcony was filled with flowers and climbing vines. Nestled in a suspended wicker chair was a girl, her eyes closed as the chair swayed gently. The early morning sunlight wasn’t too harsh, its golden warmth spilling over her face.
The chair was long enough for her to lie flat, a thin blanket draped over her stomach. Her nightgown had ridden up, revealing the tops of her thighs.
Tang Yuan slept soundly, thoroughly enjoying the solitude.
As for why she was out here alone—it all started last night.
So this was what Jiang Zi had bought all those pearls for.
She hadn’t taken them out before because they had been sent for sterilization.
Jiang Zi had always been hands-on, never using any… extra tools.
They had tried mouths and hands before, the most intense thing being… grinding tofu.
Tang Yuan had thought that was the limit.
Then, her sister had pulled out that string of pearls.
One end went in. The other was held firmly in hand.
“Baby, do the pearls taste good?”
No.
She could barely handle the back-and-forth tugging, let alone the fact that every time her sister fed them to her, her sister would have some, too.
And the mirror in the bedroom had silently recorded everything.
Jiang Zi was too bad. She insisted on making Tang Yuan watch—watch the pearls between them.
By the end of it, Tang Yuan had flat-out refused to sleep with her. After washing up, she had escaped to the balcony, curling up in the wicker chair. It fit her just right. She decided she was going to sleep separately from Jiang Zi from now on.
She knew her sister had stood at the balcony door for a long time, waiting for her. But she had been too tired. The gentle swaying of the chair was the perfect lullaby. Before she knew it, she had drifted off.
That was why, in the morning, she could be seen sleeping alone on the balcony.
Jiang Zi had prepared breakfast and came over, intending to wake her up to eat before going back inside to rest. After all, the bright sunlight made it hard to sleep well here.
But just as she approached, she heard Tang Yuan talking to the system in her mind.
Jiang Zi stopped in her tracks at the door, raising her eyes to look at the girl swaying with her back to her.
[Mission update: The male lead’s protagonist halo has dropped to 28%. As more of his subordinates are arrested, the number will continue to decrease. At present, Chu Yu has been stripped of his protagonist’s halo. Congratulations, Host, you’ve successfully trampled the male lead.]
“This wasn’t my doing.” Tang Yuan’s voice was hoarse, thick with sleep. “Without the protagonist halo, he’s just a rat that everyone wants dead. I only lowered it so more people could see him for what he really is—and take him down.”
Her voice was soft, like a kitten’s.
Jiang Zi leaned against the door, quietly watching her.
So now that Chu Yu is gone… will the system disappear, too?
That system had been living in Tang Yuan’s head all this time, always talking to her, always there—closer than anyone else.
Jiang Zi let out a quiet hmph, deeply displeased by its presence.
[Host, the world’s loopholes have now been fully corrected. Your next mission is to be with the female lead properly. I will now be retrieved by headquarters for my final upgrade. Once it’s complete, I’ll return. Please take your mission seriously.]
“Upgrade?” Tang Yuan was puzzled. “Didn’t you upgrade last time? Why do you have to go back now?”
[That was a minor update. This is a major version upgrade. I’ll be asleep for a long time.]
Tang Yuan was silent for a while before clicking her tongue. “Tsk. Hard work, System.”
[If I don’t return for a long time, don’t miss me.]
Tang Yuan rolled her eyes and turned over, muttering, “Crazy.”
At that moment, as she shifted positions, Jiang Zi instinctively stepped back into the room, putting a barrier between herself and the sight of Tang Yuan.
She could no longer see her, but she could still hear that damn system announcing favorability stats.
[Before I go, I must inform you that your current favorability with Jiang Zi is at 89%.]
Tang Yuan pulled her pillow over her head. “Go away, you stupid NPC.”
Jiang Zi froze.
Her heart clenched for a moment.
Right.
Chu Yu was gone.
But there was also the matter of Tang Yuan’s favorability.
She hadn’t seen that number appear in so long. Every day with her little Tang Yuan had been so happy, she had nearly forgotten about it.
But why…
Why is it still only 89%?
Does Tang Yuan still not love her?
Still 1% away from being lovers…
Why…
“Sister?”
Tang Yuan’s voice sounded behind her.
Jiang Zi snapped out of her daze, turning to look at her. But she couldn’t hide the grievance in her eyes.
Tang Yuan blinked in confusion, stepping closer until she was right beside her, tilting her head up. “Sister? What’s wrong? Were you trying to wake me up?”
Jiang Zi cupped her face and kissed her forehead, swallowing the bitterness in her throat. “Mm. Breakfast is ready. Go wash up and eat.”
Tang Yuan reached out and rubbed her fingers over Jiang Zi’s hand, not moving away. She simply stared at her. “Why are your hands so cold?”
Jiang Zi lowered her gaze, silent.
Tang Yuan tapped her finger against Jiang Zi’s nose. “Sister, why do you look so sad?”
Jiang Zi caught her hand and kissed her fingertip. “You won’t sleep with me at night.”
Tang Yuan yanked her hand back like she had been shocked, bolting toward the bathroom without another word.
Nope. No way.
She still wasn’t feeling well.
Maybe she should go back to the Tang family home for a couple of days.
Jiang Zi must’ve been lurking in forum threads for advanced techniques again.
Otherwise, how the hell did she learn all that!
