Chapter 91 - Engraved on a tombstone
The Lu family was a tangled mess of discord, riddled with deep-rooted corruption. Many of the core family members privately disobeyed Lu Shan’en.
On the surface, Lu Shan’en appeared to be in control, but the share he held was merely what he inherited from his late father. As for the shares in the hands of his uncles, aunts, and other relatives? Not a chance of prying even a sliver from them. He was the ultimate chosen corporate workhorse—yet still obligated to distribute dividends to them.
Although they looked down on Lu Shan’en, they wouldn’t allow outsiders to interfere. Family matters stayed behind closed doors, but when facing the outside world, they stood united.
This was why, despite Tang Gu’s relentless efforts to attack from the outside, it had little effect.
What they lacked was just a pawn they could control at will. Whether that pawn was Lu Shan’en or another Lu family member didn’t matter to them.
Tang Gu only needed a moment to realize this strategy was feasible. “Is Meng Yao’er reliable?”
After all, she was an illegitimate child. Her status within the family was obvious—it couldn’t be great.
Tang Yuan replied, “She’s pretty formidable. Lu Shan’en hasn’t been able to touch her even after eight years. Doesn’t that prove her capability?”
Jiang Zi poked Tang Yuan’s soft cheek, feeling a bit disgruntled. They weren’t even that familiar with Meng Yao’er, barely interacted for long, so why did Tang Yuan sound like she knew her so well?
Tang Yuan caught Jiang Zi’s mischievous finger, signaling with her eyes, ‘Not now. Focus.’
“None of the younger generation in the Lu family is as useful as her because she’s dead set on seeing Lu Shan’en fall. Our goals align—she’s the perfect partner.”
Tang Gu chuckled, staring at Tang Yuan with meaning. “Didn’t expect you to finally put that brain of yours to good use.”
“Hey!” Tang Yuan glared in protest.
“Alright, I’m just teasing.” Tang Gu unplugged the USB from the laptop and stuffed the documents back into the bag, including the ones Jiang Zi had printed.
“I know what to do next.” Tang Gu turned to Jiang Zi. “What about Chu Yu?”
“Let’s go with Tang Yuan’s approach.”
Tang Yuan blinked in confusion. “Huh? What approach?”
Jiang Zi patted her head reassuringly. “It’s been hectic. Hard to explain in a few words. I’ll fill you in when we get home.”
“Oh.” Tang Yuan pouted, then looked at Tang Gu. “By the way, time’s tight. It’s best to wrap this up within seven days. Ten at most if it’s really pushing it.”
“In a hurry, aren’t we?” Tang Gu sneered. “What, you think your brother’s some beast of burden?”
Tang Yuan flashed a sweet, flattering smile. “Of course not~ It’s just that the capable work harder, right? I’m only here to support—the main carry is still you, big bro. After all, your business acumen is unmatched. Schemes and plots are like child’s play to you.”
Tang Gu couldn’t even be bothered to look at her.
Still, with the groundwork he’d laid before, seven days… might actually be doable.
Suddenly, Tang Gu had a fleeting realization—Why does it feel like I’m destined for a life of endless toil?
After Tang Gu left, Tang Yuan suddenly lunged at Jiang Zi, pinning her down on the sofa.
Tang Yuan propped herself up with both hands beside Jiang Zi’s head, narrowing the distance. “Jiang Zi, fess up. What exactly have you and my brother been busy with lately?”
She hadn’t realized that Jiang Zi’s relentless overtime this past week involved Tang Gu as well.
Jiang Zi cupped Tang Yuan’s waist with both hands, her face full of helplessness. “Baby, don’t look at me like I’ve been cheating on you. There’s nothing between me and your brother.”
Tang Yuan’s eyes widened, and she almost lost her balance. “That’s not what I’m asking!”
“Don’t change the subject.” Tang Yuan’s expression grew serious. “Is this related to Chu Yu? You’d better not keep me in the dark.”
Anything involving Chu Yu was basically an SSS-level national emergency in her book.
Jiang Zi snorted, “You’re always thinking about him.”
“Ah??” Tang Yuan’s face twisted into an expression that could rival the shocked-cat meme.
She admitted, “Of course I’m thinking about him—thinking about getting his name engraved on a tombstone.”
Hearing that, Jiang Zi finally brightened up. “Same here.”
“I’ve been working with Tang Gu to track Chu Yu’s smuggling routes. We’ve identified all the import-export channels, found several domestic bases, and confirmed their locations. But there are too many contacts—we’ve only got part of the list so far. Just not enough time.”
Tang Yuan let out a breath of relief. “That’s it?”
“And we’ve been sharing intel accumulated over the years.” Jiang Zi grabbed Tang Yuan’s slender wrist, the one supporting her weight.
Tang Yuan’s arm gave out, and she collapsed onto Jiang Zi. Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Zi intertwined their fingers and wrapped her other arm around Tang Yuan’s waist, effortlessly flipping their positions so she was on top.
“Even if he’s a cockroach that refuses to die, we’ll make sure he stays squashed for a while.”
Jiang Zi had been biding her time, always plotting to deal a heavy blow to the male lead. No matter how many failed attempts she faced, nothing slowed her down.
The moment his luck faltered, she’d know—It’s time.
Jiang Zi’s hair brushed against Tang Yuan’s face, tickling her. But with one hand pinned and the other squished between the sofa and Jiang Zi, she couldn’t escape. She tilted her head awkwardly to avoid it.
She suddenly remembered her earlier point. “Sister, wait—after we’re done with Lu Shan’en, I still have one more thing to do. After that, we can give Chu Yu the ultimate blow.”
Jiang Zi didn’t ask. She already knew what Tang Yuan planned—after all, she’d heard her inner toughts.
“For now, don’t mention that cursed thing.” Jiang Zi leaned down, planting a soft kiss on Tang Yuan’s cheek where her hair had brushed. The light touch made Tang Yuan giggle involuntarily, trying to squirm away, only for Jiang Zi to suddenly bite down gently.
A shiver shot through Tang Yuan’s body.
“Stop that! You’re going to leave a mark on my face!” Tang Yuan protested, trying to push her away but failing.
This time, Jiang Zi obediently shifted her attention, grazing down to Tang Yuan’s lips, stealing her rosy tint as if savoring a delicate dessert.
“Tang Yuan, I’m hungry. Skipped lunch.”
Tang Yuan had eaten breakfast late, so she wasn’t hungry, but Jiang Zi was on a strict schedule—right on time for her meal.
Tang Yuan opened her mouth to suggest going out for food, but before she could speak, Jiang Zi seized the opportunity, claiming her lips with fervor, clearly treating her as lunch.
When the kiss finally ended, Jiang Zi softly licked Tang Yuan’s now bare lips. They no longer carried any color, but they were as red as rose petals.
“I want Tang Yuan(Dumplings).”
That sentence snapped Tang Yuan out of her daze instantly.
Because every time they were in bed, Jiang Zi would say that.
“Jiang Zi!” Tang Yuan’s ears turned bright red. “You really need to learn some self-control!”
Jiang Zi sighed dramatically, but she knew if she pushed further now, Tang Yuan would be mad for days.
Still, she refused to get up, insisting, “Don’t call me Jiang Zi. Call me ‘wifey.’”
Tang Yuan ignored her.
Jiang Zi repeated firmly, “Call me wifey.”
Unable to resist, Tang Yuan’s voice softened into a shy whisper, “Wifey… can you get up?”
Jiang Zi smiled triumphantly, thoroughly satisfied.
